Timorese Social Democratic Action Center
The ''Centro Acção Social-Democrata Timorense'' (), abbreviated as Centro ASDT or CASDT is a political party in Timor-Leste. Founded by its late first party president Gil da Costa A.N. Alves, he was the former Secretary General of the '' Associação Social-Democrata Timorense (ASDT)'' party. The party motto is “Justiça, Unidade, Solidaridade” ( ). History Centro ASDT was officially recognized as a political party on 2 September 2015 by the ''Tribunal de Recurso de Timor-Leste'' (). The party's first National Congress took place on 19 December 2015 in the hall of the ''Comissão Nacional de Eleições'' (). Fretilin
The Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor ( pt, Frente Revolucionária de Timor-Leste Independente, abbreviated as Fretilin) is a centre-left political party in East Timor. They presently hold 23 of 65 seats in the National Parliament. Fretilin formed the government in East Timor until their independence in 2002. They obtained the Presidency in 2017 under Francisco Guterres, but lost in the 2022 East Timorese presidential election. Fretilin began as a resistance movement that fought for the independence of East Timor, originally from Portugal in 1974 and later from Indonesia until 1998. 2023 East Timorese Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in East Timor on 21 May 2023. The governing coalition going into the election was a four-party government of Fretilin– PLP– KHUNTO– PD, whilst CNRT was in opposition and held the executive branch. Background Initially, after the 2018 East Timorese parliamentary election, the VIII Constitutional Government was drawn from and supported by a coalition known as the Alliance for Change and Progress (AMP), which was made up of the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT), the People's Liberation Party (PLP) and Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHUNTO). The Socialist Party of Timor ( pt, Partido Socialista de Timor, PST) is a Marxist–Leninist political party in East Timor. History The Socialist Party of Timor was founded in February 1997, whilst East Timor was still under Indonesian occupation (though it claims it was founded earlier on 20 December 1990). It is a splinter party of the Fretilin and was established by Avelino Maria da Silva Coelho, Pedro Martires da Costa and Antonio Maher Lopes. Parliamentary elections were held in East Timor on 22 July 2017. Fretilin narrowly emerged as the largest party in the National Parliament, winning 23 seats to the 22 won by the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction, which had been the largest party in the outgoing Parliament. Francisco Xavier do Amaral (3 December 1937 – 6 March 2012) was an East Timorese politician. A founder of the ''Frente Revolucionária de Timor Leste Independente'' (Fretilin), Amaral was sworn in as the first President of East Timor when the country, then a Portuguese colony, made a unilateral declaration of independence on 28 November 1975. He was a member of the National Parliament for the Timorese Social Democratic Association from 2001 until his death in 2012. Amaral was also known as "Abo (Grandfather) Xavier", a term of endearment, by East Timorese. 2022 East Timorese Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in East Timor on 19 March 2022. Incumbent Francisco Guterres sought election to a second term. As none of the presidential nominees received at least 50% of the cast votes, a runoff was held on 19 April 2022, between the top two candidates, José Ramos-Horta and Guterres. Ramos-Horta won the runoff with 62.1% of the total votes cast. The election marked the first time that someone had been re-elected to the East Timorese presidency (albeit to a non-consecutive term), as well as the second time that an incumbent president had been defeated – after the 2012 election, when Ramos-Horta was eliminated in the first round.
