Henry Timken (August 16, 1831 in Bremen, Germany – March 16, 1909 in San Diego, California) was an inventor and businessman who founded the Timken Roller Bearing Company, later called the Timken Company. His family migrated to the United States when he was 7 years old. He began his business career in the St. Louis region. His inventions of an improved carriage spring and an improved roller bearing brought him the money needed to create a company dedicated to the latter. Biography Henry Timken was born in Bremen, now in Germany, and emigrated to the United States with his family when he was seven years old. The Timkens settled in Sedalia, Missouri; Henry left the family farm to apprentice under carriage-builder Caspar Schurmeier. Timken opened his own carriage-building company in St. Louis in 1855, and introduced several improvements to the carriages his firm produced, including his patented "Timken buggy spring", which made him a fortune. Timken is a city in Rush County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 38. History Timken was named after a land speculator, Henry Timken, who purchased land in which he believed that the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad would be building. When Henry Timken sold the land to the railroad, one of the conditions was that the town was named after him. During the year to follow a lumber mill, railroad depot, grocery store, and even a bowling alley would be established in the town. The town was settled mainly by immigrants from Czechoslovakia, Bohemia and Moravia. A post office was opened in Timken in 1888, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1996. Timken 1111, also called the Timken Four Aces, was a 4-8-4 steam locomotive built in 1930 by American Locomotive Company (Alco) as a demonstration unit for new roller bearings produced by the Timken Roller Bearing Company. It was the first locomotive built with all sealed roller bearings rather than plain bearings or a combination of the two. It was later operated by the Northern Pacific Railroad as their 2626. Timken attempted to cooperate with Northern Pacific Railroad at the end of the engine's career to preserve it and while the Northern Pacific was willing to cooperate in preserving the engine, the attempt ultimately failed and the engine was scrapped in 1958. Company history In 1898, Henry Timken obtained a patent for an improved tapered roller bearing, and in 1899 incorporated as The Timken Roller Bearing Axle Company in St. Louis. In 1901, the company moved to Canton, Ohio, as the automobile industry began to overtake the carriage industry. Timken High School was a high school in Canton, Ohio. Timken participated in the Principals Athletic Conference (PAC-7/8), before they were absorbed by Canton McKinley in 2015. Formation Timken Vocational High School was built in the 1930s by a donation from the Timken Foundation to the city of Canton, Ohio. As part of the Canton City School District with four quadrants and three district high schools, students could choose to take a test and enter a vocational program at Timken from any of the quadrants. Students were given opportunity to explore several occupational experiences during their Sophomore year. Their Junior and Senior year was spent in their choice of vocational program. For many years, the Timken Company hired the highest achieving Seniors and graduates from Secretarial Class, the Machine Shop, Electric Shop, Data Processing, and Welding Shop. The Timken House is a New World Queen Anne Revival architecture, Queen Anne Victorian era, Victorian house in San Diego in the state of California, USA. It was designed by the prominent architects Comstock and Trotsche and built in 1888. It was the last residence of inventor Henry Timken (1831-1909). The Timken Museum of Art is a fine art museum, established in 1965 and located at 1500 El Prado in Balboa Park in San Diego, California, close to the San Diego Museum of Art. History The groundwork for the museum was laid in 1951 when Walter Ames helped sisters Amy and Anne Putnam (nieces and heirs of Henry W. Putnam) to form the nonprofit Putnam Foundation to own and manage their art collection. The sisters had settled in San Diego in the early 20th century and made donations to the San Diego Museum of Art in its early years. At first the Foundation loaned items from its collection to noteworthy museums across the United States.
