Bennett, Coleman and Company Limited, (abbreviated as B.C.C.L. and d/b/a The Times Group), is an Indian media conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The company remains a family-owned business with Sahu Jain family owning a majority stake in The Times Group. History On 3 November 1838, the ''Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce'' was first published, a predecessor of what would become ''The Times of India''. While starting as a biweekly paper, it was converted to a daily in 1850. In 1859 the paper was merged with two other papers into the ''Bombay Times and Standard'' under editor Robert Knight. Two years later, in 1861, the paper got a more national scope with the title ''The Times of India''. Feroze Gandhi (born Feroze Jehangir Ghandy;: "Feroze Gandhi was also from the Nehrus' home town, Allahabad. A Parsi by faith, he at first spelt his surname 'Ghandy'. Dalmia Bharat Group, (DBG) is an Indian conglomerate company, which trace their origin to the businesses established by ''Ramkrishna Dalmia'' and Jaidayal Dalmia. Thomas Jewell Bennett
Sir Thomas Jewell Bennett (16 May 1852 in Wisbech – 16 January 1925 in Hans Place, London) was a British journalist and Conservative Party politician. He is most notable as an editor of ''The Times of India'', as well as its principal proprietor. He was also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Sevenoaks constituency (in Kent, England) from 1918 to 1923. Bennett was the son of John Thomas Jewell who was a first cousin of the English composer William Sterndale Bennett. He took up the career of journalism and became assistant editor of the ''Western Daily Press'' in Bristol, after which he was a leader writer at ''The Standard''. In 1884, he went to Bombay in British India, where for eight years he was an associate editor of the ''Bombay Gazette''. Robert Knight (13 March 1825 – 27 January 1890) was an English editor, journalist and newspaper proprietor. He was considered an avid critic of British imperialism and was an editor of ''Times of India'' and founder of ''The Statesman'', two of the most prominent newspapers in India. Biography Knight was born in Vauxhall Walk, Lambeth, London. He came to Bombay in British India in 1847 as a 22-year-old and later took up journalism and writing articles in newspapers. Robert Knight became the Editor of the ''Bombay Times'' in 1857 replacing George Buist.
