Hazzan
A ''hazzan'' (; , lit. Hazan) or ''chazzan'' ( he, חַזָּן , plural ; Yiddish ''khazn''; Ladino ''Hasan'') is a Jewish musician or precentor trained in the vocal arts who helps lead the congregation in songful prayer. In English, this prayer leader is often referred to as a cantor, a term also used in Christianity. ''Sh'liaḥ tzibbur'' and the evolution of the hazzan The person leading the congregation in public prayers is called the '' sh'liaḥ tzibbur'' (Hebrew for "emissary of the congregation"). Jewish law restricts this role to adult Jews; among Orthodox Jews, it is restricted to males. A cantor or chanter is a person who leads people in singing or sometimes in prayer. In formal Jewish worship, a cantor is a person who sings solo verses or passages to which the choir or congregation responds. In Judaism, a cantor sings and leads congregants in prayer in Jewish religious services; sometimes called a hazzan. A cantor in Reform and Conservative Judaism, just like in Orthodox Judaism, goes through years of extensive religious education, similar to that of a Rabbi, in order to become an officially recognized cantor. Tannoz Bahremand Foruzanfar became the first Persian woman to be ordained as a cantor in the United States in 2009. Foruzanfar was born in Tehran and moved to the United States when she was two. Jalda Rebling
Jalda Rebling (born 1951 in Amsterdam) is a German hazzan. A year after birth, she and her parents moved to East Germany in 1952. Her parents survived the Holocaust, and Rebling's mother and aunt, Janny Brandes-Brilleslijper, were the first to tell Otto Frank of his daughters' deaths. Her mother Rebekka Brilleslijper, also known as Lin Jaldati, was a well-known singer of Yiddish music while her father, Eberhard Rebling, was a musicologist. Her sister Kathinka Rebling is also a musicologist. In 1987 Rebling helped organize a Yiddish culture festival in Germany, which occurred every year into the 1990s. Susan Wehle
Susan Wehle (May 14, 1953 – February 12, 2009) was ordained the first American female Jewish Renewal cantor (hazzan) in 2006. Wehle was a cantor for Temple Beth Am in Williamsville, New York, and Temple Sinai in Amherst, New York, for nine years. She created one CD, ''Songs of Healing and Hope''. She was the daughter of Holocaust survivors Hana and Kurt Wehle, and had two sons, Jonah and Jake. Avitall Gerstetter ( he, אביטל גרסטטר; born 1972 ) is the first female hazzan (cantor) in Jewish Renewal and the first female cantor in Germany. Early life Gerstetter was born into a Jewish family in 1972. Her father is a convert to Judaism. Career Gerstetter was ordained in 2002. Reconstructionist Judaism
Reconstructionist Judaism is a Jewish movement that views Judaism as a progressively evolving civilization rather than a religion, based on concepts developed by Mordecai Kaplan (1881–1983). The movement originated as a semi-organized stream within Conservative Judaism and developed from the late 1920s to 1940s, before it seceded in 1955 and established a rabbinical college in 1967.
