Bonn
The federal city of Bonn ( lat, Bonna) is a city on the banks of the Rhine in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with a population of over 300,000. About south-southeast of Cologne, Bonn is in the southernmost part of the Rhine-Ruhr region, Germany's largest metropolitan area, with over 11 million inhabitants. The Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn (german: Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn) is a public research university located in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn
The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn, or LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn, is a museum in Bonn, Germany, run by the Rhineland Landscape Association. It is one of the oldest museums in the country. In 2003 it completed an extensive renovation. The museum has a number of notable ancient busts and figures dating back to Roman times. History An early forerunner, the "Museum of Antiquities" (''Museum Rheinisch-Westfälischer Alterthümer''), was founded in 1820 by decree of the Prussian state chancellor Karl August von Hardenberg. A more direct ancestor, the "Provincial Museum", was founded in 1874, though it did not get its own building until 1893. This was enlarged in 1907, but the older section was destroyed during World War II and replaced by a new building. Beethovenfest
The Beethovenfest (Beethoven Festival) is a festival of classical music in Bonn, Germany, dedicated mostly to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven who was born there. It dates back to 1845, when the composer's 75th anniversary of birth was celebrated with unveiling his monument and performing major works. First held irregularly, it is now an annual event, presenting around 70 concerts of international orchestras, ensembles and soloists in more than 20 venues in the town and the region. Beethoven House
The Beethoven House (German: ''Beethoven-Haus'') in Bonn, Germany, is a memorial site, museum and cultural institution serving various purposes. Founded in 1889 by the Beethoven-Haus association, it studies the life and work of composer Ludwig van Beethoven. The centrepiece of the Beethoven-Haus is Beethoven's birthplace at Bonngasse 20. This building houses the museum. The neighbouring buildings (Bonngasse 18 and 24 to 26) accommodate a research centre (Beethoven archive) comprising a collection, a library and publishing house, and a chamber music hall. Bonn-Beuel Station
Bonn-Beuel station is on the East Rhine Railway in the Bonn district of Beuel in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Infrastructure The station was opened on 1 March 1871 and has three platform tracks and several sidings. Somewhat hidden from the station building, there are some tracks which are used by the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn for special passenger services, especially during the Pützchen's market (a five or six day fair usually held in September). In addition, there is also a freight shed at the station. It, including its unloading and loading roads, as well as the entrance building, the two platforms and the platform canopy are heritage-listed. The station has some special features compared to neighbouring stations. In astronomy, Durchmusterung or Bonner Durchmusterung (BD) is an astrometric star catalogue of the whole sky, compiled by the Bonn Observatory in Germany from 1859 to 1903. The name comes from ('run-through examination'), a German word used for a systematic survey of objects or data. The term has sometimes been used for other astronomical surveys, including not only stars, but also the search for other celestial objects. Special tasks include celestial scanning in electromagnetic wavelengths shorter or longer than visible light waves. Leopold Kaufmann
Leopold Ernst Kaufmann (13 March 1821 – 27 February 1898) was a German politician. Brother of the poet and folklorist Alexander Kaufmann, he became Chief Burgomaster of Bonn. Life 1840s-1850s With his brother Alexander, he attended the grammar school of his native city, and in the autumn of 1840, through Ernst Moritz Arndt, who had shortly before been reinstated in his professorship, Kaufmann matriculated as student of law at the University of Bonn. His sister Maria Theresia Julia (Julia) Kaufmann was the mother of Francis Hueffer, German-English music critic and librettist and thus the grandmother of Ford Madox Ford, Oliver Madox Hueffer and Juliet Catherine Emma Hueffer (wife of David Soskice and mother of Frank Soskice). Beethovenhalle
The Beethovenhalle () is a concert hall in Bonn. It is the third hall in that city to bear the name of Bonn-born composer Ludwig van Beethoven. History The first Beethovenhalle was a temporary structure built in 1845 during the inauguration of the Beethoven Monument, located in the Münsterplatz. The second hall was built in 1870 for centennial celebration of Beethoven's birth. It was also wood with a stucco Neoclassical façade and a rectangular auditorium. The interior contained galleries along the side walls and could accommodate 1,500 people. During the next several years, the hall not only hosted concerts, but also poetry readings, boxing matches, charity bazaars, the Oberammergau Passion Play and gatherings for the Nazi Party. Bonn–Cologne Railway Company
The Bonn–Cologne Railway Company (german: Bonn-Cölner Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, BCE) is a former German Railway company, founded in July 1837 in Bonn and granted a concession on 6 July 1840 to build and operate a railway line between Bonn and Cologne. History Two options were examined for the route: a direct line along the course of the Rhine would have been cheaper. This would have passed through a sparsely populated area, which would have produced few passengers. Half a century later this route was used by the Rhine Bank Railway (''Rheinuferbahn'') built by another ''Cologne-Bonn railway'' (''Köln-Bonner Eisenbahnen'')—now line 16 of the Cologne and Bonn Stadtbahns.
