Volgograd International Airport
Volgograd International Airport (russian: Международный Аэропорт Волгоград) is an airport located 15 km northwest of the city of Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, in Russia. It comprises a civilian airport built on top of an older military runway (3300 m), now demolished. The terminal area parks 42 medium/large aircraft and 91 small aircraft. A military training unit was present at Gumrak as late as 1994, the 706 UAP (706th Aviation Training Regiment), using Aero L-39 aircraft. However a more recent report puts 706 UAP at Beketovsk until 1997. Volgograd Airport served as base for Air Volga. When the airline went bankrupt in April 2010, its aircraft and most of the routes were taken over by RusLine. In 2012 it was announced that Volgograd airport would have a new terminal and runway built which would bring the airport up to European standards, it is currently being built and will be complete sometime in 2017. The Volgograd State Pedagogical University (russian: Волгоградский государственный педагогический университет, abbreviation: ''VSPU'') is one of the major pedagogical institutions in the Russian Federation. The university is located in Volgograd, formerly known as Stalingrad (Russia). History of the University Established by decree of the Council of the People's Commissars of the USSR in 1931, it was previously known as the ''Stalingrad Industrial Pedagogical Institute''. It was completely ruined during the Stalingrad battle of World War II and its library burnt out. In 1949, the school was renamed in honor of a Russian Proletarian writer, Alexander Serafimovich. Under political reforms of Nikita Khrushchev, the city was renamed from Stalingrad to Volgograd in 1961, and the name of the institution was changed to the ''Volgograd State Pedagogical Institute''. FC Olimpia Volgograd (russian: «Олимпия» (Волгоград)) is a Russian football team from the large city of Volgograd. They are the second- or third-largest club in the city after the famous Rotor Volgograd. History From their founding in 1989 until 1997, the club participated in various youth leagues. Some time between 1993 and 1994 the Volgograd native Leonid Slutsky, future coach of the Russian national team, joined the training staff. Among the Olimpia youth players developed under Slutsky were Denis Kolodin, Roman Adamov, Andrei Bochkov, Maksim Burchenko and Aleksei Zhdanov, all of whom went on to play in the Russian Premier League. As this group of players graduated from the youth team, they and Olimpia joined first the senior Amateur Football League in 1998 and, after winning the South Zone in 1999, the professional Second Division. The Volgograd Metrotram (Skorostnoy Tramvay, ST) is a light rail surface/subway line operating in Volgograd, Russia. It was inaugurated on 5 November 1984, and had served 50 million passengers per year at the time the 2011 extension was opened. The line consists of 22 stations along the Volga River on a route from the northern suburbs of Volgograd to the city center, with a total length of . Most of the line shares a surface-level right of way with existing tram lines; this section spans a total of .
