The Valkhof At Nijmegen
''The Valkhof at Nijmegen'' is an oil painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Aelbert Cuyp, likely painted between 1652 and 1654. It is now held in the Indianapolis Museum of Art. ''The Valkhof at Nijmegen'' typifies the Dutch landscape. A small boat filled with fisherman wait to capture lobsters. Two fat cows sit at the bank of the river, with their herder and two guests. The herder's red jacket is the focal point, drawing the eye in and breaking up the muted tones of the rest of the painting. International Four Days Marches Nijmegen
The International Four Day Marches Nijmegen ( nl, Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen) is the largest multiple day marching event in the world. It is organised every year in Nijmegen, Netherlands in mid-July as a means of promoting sport and exercise. Participants walk , or daily, depending on their age and gender and, on completion, receive a royally approved medal (Vierdaagsekruis). The participants are mostly civilians, but there are also a few thousand military participants. Military participants' distance is 40 km, in uniform, carrying at least marching weight for men aged 18–49; for women, the weight is optional. Summary The ''Vierdaagse'' (Dutch for "four days event") is an annual walk that has taken place since 1909. Based at Nijmegen since 1924, it now takes place in the third week of July. Concertgebouw De Vereeniging
Concertgebouw de Vereeniging is a concert hall located in Nijmegen, Netherlands. The facility officially opened in 1915 and is built in a mixture of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. It has a capacity of 1,450 seats (or 1,800 standing people during pop concerts), and is renowned for its outstanding acoustics for orchestral music. Concertgebouw de Vereeniging is a designated Rijksmonument. History In 1882, the private society De Vereeniging was established with a concert hall at the Keizer Karelplein. Around 1900 the old Nijmegen concert hall turned out to have had its best time, plans were made for a new one. That these plans were not a superfluous luxury, was evident from the attitude of conductor Willem Mengelberg. He refused to visit Nijmegen any longer as long as nothing was done to the accommodation. Nijmegen–Venlo Railway
The Nijmegen–Venlo railway, also called Maaslijn, is a railway line in the Netherlands running from Nijmegen to Venlo, passing through Boxmeer and Venray. The line was opened in 1883. Between 2006 and 2016, passenger transport on the line was exploited by Veolia. From 2016 to 2031, Arriva will provide train services on the line. Future The line is planned to be electrified in 2024. Once this is completed it is planned to operate additional fast services along the line. Nijmegen Railway Bridge
The Nijmegen railway bridge is a truss bridge spanning the River Waal, connecting the city of Nijmegen to the town of Lent in the Netherlands. Construction Construction started in 1875, on the site of an ancient Roman bridge, and was completed 4 years later in 1879. It originally consisted of 3 truss arches. The southern land abutment, styled as a medieval city gate, was designed by Dutch architect P.J.H Cuypers. These tower structures served the purposes of protecting the entrance to the city of Nijmegen. The railway bridge's construction meant that train connections to Arnhem were possible, thus Nijmegen was the last major city in the Netherlands to be connected to the national rail network. Second World War The middle arch of the bridge was destroyed twice during the Second World War, but despite this it survived the conflict.
