Boise (, , ) is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Idaho and is the county seat of Ada County. On the Boise River in southwestern Idaho, it is east of the Oregon border and north of the Nevada border. The downtown area's elevation is above sea level. The population according to the 2020 US Census was 235,684. The Boise metropolitan area, also known as the Treasure Valley, includes five counties with a combined population of 749,202, the most populous metropolitan area in Idaho. Christ Chapel (Boise, Idaho)
Christ Chapel (formerly St. Michael's Episcopal Church) is a historic chapel on Broadway at Campus Drive in Boise, Idaho on the campus of Boise State University. It is one of the oldest church buildings in the state. The Gothic Revival building was constructed in 1866 as St. Michael's Episcopal Church. In addition to serving as a church, the building was used as a school house for St. Margaret's School, which was founded in 1892. St. Margaret's School eventually became Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) in 1932. In 1963 the Christ Chapel Historical Society was founded to restore Christ Chapel and move it to the Boise State University campus, where it remains today. The chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and is often used for weddings today. The Historical Society continues to own the building. Western Idaho Fair
The Western Idaho Fair is the one of the annual state fairs of Idaho. It has been held in the capital city of Boise virtually every late summer/early fall since 1897, and annually in the city of Garden City on the grounds of the Expo Idaho since 1967. It is usually held from the third Friday of August, until the fourth Sunday of August. The corresponding Eastern Idaho Fair is held in Bingham County at Blackfoot. History Western Idaho Fair's historical precursor was the Idaho Intermountain Fair, first held in 1897. As with many fairs of its era it was primarily an agricultural and livestock exhibition; sheep, cattle, horses and hogs were shipped to Boise from all over the West for the event. Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel is a synagogue in Boise, Idaho. Its 1896 building is amongst the oldest synagogues in continuous use west of the Mississippi River. The congregation is affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism. Boise High School is a public secondary school in Boise, Idaho, one of five traditional high schools within the city limits, four of which are in the Boise School District. A three-year comprehensive high school, Boise High is located on the outlying edge of the city's downtown business core. The enrollment for the 2014–15 school year was approximately 1,481. The Boise High boundary includes all of Hidden Springs and a section of Garden City. History 1882 to 1930 Before Boise High School, the Treasure Valley was serviced by Central High School. Opened in 1882, it cost $44,000 instead of the originally estimated sum of $25,000. Assay Office (Boise, Idaho)
The Assay Office is a historic building at 210 Main Street in Boise, Idaho. It is significant for its role in the history of mining in Idaho, and was the first major federal government building in the Idaho Territory. During the first half of the 1860s, Idaho's gold production was the third highest in the nation. Due to the difficulty of transporting bulky, heavy ores the long distance to the nearest U.S. Mint in San Francisco, there was great demand for an assaying office in Idaho. Gold and other precious metals are not mined in a pure form. In order to place a value on an ore, the precious metal must be separated from the impurities. This is what an assay office does. Old Idaho State Penitentiary
The Old Idaho Penitentiary State Historic Site was a functional prison from 1872 to 1973 in the western United States, east of Boise, Idaho. The first building, also known as the Territorial Prison, was constructed in the Territory of Idaho in 1870; the territory was seven years old when the prison was built, a full two decades before statehood. From its beginnings as a single cell house, the penitentiary grew to a complex of several distinctive buildings surrounded by a sandstone wall. The stone was quarried from the nearby ridges by the resident convicts, who also assisted in later constructions.
