Bergamo (; lmo, Bèrghem ; from the proto- Germanic elements *''berg +*heim'', the "mountain home") is a city in the alpine Lombardy region of northern Italy, approximately northeast of Milan, and about from Switzerland, the alpine lakes Como and Iseo and 70 km (43 mi) from Garda and Maggiore. The Republic of Bergamo (Italian: ''Repubblica Bergamasca'') was an ephemeral revolutionary client republic, created on 13 March 1797 by the French army to rule the local administration of Bergamo and its province, during the dissolution of the Republic of Venice. With the Preliminary of Leoben, France and Austria agreed the end of the multi-centennial Venetian rule over the territory between Adda River and Oglio River, together with the Austrian occupation of Istria and Dalmatia. Defined as ''"mother-municipality"'', the administration of the city of Bergamo had to help the creation of ''"dependent-municipalities"'' in all the surrounding county. The University of Bergamo ( it, Università degli Studi di Bergamo; acronym: UniBG) is an Italian public university located in Bergamo, Italy. It was founded on 11 December 1968 and is organized in seven departments, three campuses and forty-one degree courses. History The University of Bergamo, founded in 1968, was originally named "Institute of Foreign Languages and Literature". Under Rector Serio Galeotti (1972–75), the degree course in economics and business was introduced (1974), finally becoming a Faculty in 1988. Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, known for sponsorship reasons as the Gewiss Stadium since July 2019 and as Stadio di Bergamo in UEFA competitions, is a stadium in Bergamo, Italy. Monument To Donizetti, Bergamo
The Monument to Donizetti is located in a public garden in Piazza Cavour, adjacent to the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo. It commemorates the opera composer Gaetano Donizetti, a native of Bergamo. It was inaugurated in 1897 to mark the centenary of the composer's birth. The monument was designed by Francesco Jerace as a result of a competition. Bergamo Funicular Railway Upper Town - Lower Town
The Funicular Railway Upper City - Lower City (Italian: ''Funicolare Città Alta''), is a funicular railway line in the city of Bergamo, Italy. It connects the historic core of ''Città Alta'' (the suspended fortified city of Bergamo built up on a hill) with the ''Città Bassa'', the financial lower city. Built in 1887, it is one of the two funicular lines serving the city of Bergamo; the other being the Bergamo - San Vigilio funicular. Features The twin track funicular railway of Bergamo owns a peculiarity: the tracks have different lengths (right 240 m and left 234 m). The difference in height is 85 meters, with a maximum gradient of 52%. Civic Museum of Natural Science Enrico Caffi ( it, Museo di Scienze Naturali Enrico Caffi) is a natural history museum in Bergamo, Italy. The museum has more than 55,000 artifacts, fossils, animal and plant specimens. The museum is founded in 1918 and, after multiple moves, is currently located at Piazza Cittadella.
