Going Cardboard
''Going Cardboard: A Board Game Documentary'' is a 2012 documentary about the American adoption of German-style board games, and includes coverage of the 2009 board game event ''Spiel'' in Essen, Germany, as well as interviews with many prominent game designers. The film was written, directed and produced by Lorien Green, who was introduced to board gaming by her husband. It was financed through the crowd funding service Kickstarter. Summary Lorien Green shows how modern board games became popular in the United States. This includes interviews with influential game designers, fans, collectors, shop owners, specialized journalists and entrepreneurs who explain how, of all things, the internet promoted the success of non-digital games. It's been suggested that it's a useful tool to introduce newcomers to organized board gaming. Reception The ''Geeks Playing Games'' website called it a "must see for anyone interested in the people behind the games and the process behind the producti ... Deutscher Spiele Preis
__NOTOC__ The Deutscher Spielepreis (, ''German Game Prize'') is an important award for boardgames. It was started in 1990 by the German magazine ''Die Pöppel-Revue'', which collects votes from the industry's stores, magazines, professionals and game clubs. The results are announced every October at the '' Spiel'' game fair in Essen, Germany. The Essen Feather is awarded at the same ceremony. In contrast to the Spiel des Jahres, which tends to be awarded to family games, the DSP is awarded for "gamers' games" with particularly good or innovative gameplay. Although at one point it was not uncommon for the DSP and the SdJ to be awarded to the same game (as was the case for '' The Settlers of Catan'', '' El Grande,'' and ''Tikal'' in the 1990s), since ''Carcassonne'' (2001) only two games have succeeded in winning both awards: ''Dominion'' in 2009 and ''Azul'' in 2018. Definition The forest is a natural system that can supply different products and services. Forests supply water, mitigate climate change, provide habitats for wildlife including many pollinators which are essential for sustainable food production, provide timber and fuelwood, serve as a source of non-wood forest produc ... Eurogame
A Eurogame, also called a German-style board game, German game, or Euro-style game, (generally just referred to as board games in Europe) is a class of tabletop games that generally has indirect player interaction and abstract physical components. Eurogames are sometimes contrasted with American-style board games, which generally involve more luck, conflict, and drama. They are usually less abstract than chess or Go, but more abstract than wargames. Likewise, they generally require more thought and planning than party games such as ''Pictionary'' or ''Trivial Pursuit''. History Contemporary Eurogames, such as ''Acquire'', appeared in the 1960s. The 3M series of which ''Acquire'' formed a part became popular in Germany, and became a template for a new form of game, one in which direct conflict or warfare did not play a role, due in part to aversion in postwar Germany to products which glorified conflict. Barbarossa (board Game)
''Barbarossa'' is a plasticine-shaping German-style board game for 3 to 6 players, designed by Klaus Teuber in and published in 1988 by Kosmos in German and by Rio Grande Games in English. ''Barbarossa'' won the 1988 Spiel des Jahres award. Gameplay The game is played on a circular board, with three tracks running around it. Around the outside are the scoring track and the elfstone (money) track. Further in there is a circular track with twelve marked spaces on it, and in the center there is a space for sculptures. Later editions of the game change the shape of the board but not its contents. At the start of the game, each player chooses two objects from a list provided and creates plasticine sculptures of each, and places them in the middle of the board. Each player places on the board three tokens: a magician, a witches' hat and an Elfstone. The hats are placed on the scoring track; the elfstones are placed on the elfstone track, and the magicians are placed on the space m ... Entdecker
