The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Ridgeland, South Carolina
Ridgeland is a town in Jasper and Beaufort counties, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,749 at the 2020 census, a 7.1% decrease from 2010. It has been the county seat of Jasper County since the county's formation in 1912. As defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, Ridgeland is included within the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort metropolitan area. Ridgeland is home to the Ridgeland Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison operated by the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Ridgeland was originally known as "Gopher Hill" in 1894, derived from the gopher tortoise, which is indigenous to the area. South Carolina Highway 336 (SC 336) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It serves to connect Ridgeland with nearby U.S. Route 321 (US 321) and SC 462. Tillman School
The Tillman School is a historic school building at 191 Cotton Hill Road ( United States Route 321) in Tillman, South Carolina. It is a single-story T-shaped brick building with Craftsman styling. Its roof has extended eaves with exposed rafter tails, and large knee brackets for support. The interior is little altered since its construction. The school was built in 1926-27 as part of a consolidation of local district schools. It was closed in 1963. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
