Tigist Assefa
Tigist Assefa Tessema (born 28 March 1994) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner, a former 800 metres specialist. After her marathon debut in April 2022, she improved by over 18 minutes and set the third-fastest mark on the world all-time list (currently fifth) at the 2022 Berlin Marathon. In 2013, Assefa was the 800 metres bronze medallist at the African Junior Championships. With her 2014 personal best in the event, she became in 2022 in Berlin the first woman in history to break two minutes for 800 m and 2:20 for the marathon. Career In August 2014, Tigist Assefa placed fourth in the women's 800 metres at the African Championships in Athletics in Marrakesh, Morocco. Reims ( , , ; also spelled Rheims in English) is the most populous city in the French department of Marne, and the 12th most populous city in France. The 2014 African Championships in Athletics was held in Marrakech, Morocco from 10 to 14 August 2014. The competition was the 19th edition of Africa senior championships. The competition served as preparation to African athletes for the next continental cup which is planned to hold on 13 and 14 September 2014 in Marrakech. Negative Split
A negative split is a racing strategy that involves completing the second half of a race faster than the first half. It is defined by the intentional setting of a slower initial pace, followed by a gradual or sudden increase of speed towards the end of the race. Alternate strategies include ''even splitting'' (racing at a steady pace) or ''sit and kick'' (also known as a sprint finish). Conversely, the act of completing the first half of a race faster than the second half is known as a positive split. Paula Radcliffe
Paula Jane Radcliffe MBE (born 17 December 1973) is a former British long-distance runner. She is a three-time winner of the London Marathon (2002, 2003, 2005), three-time New York Marathon champion (2004, 2007, 2008), and 2002 Chicago Marathon winner. She was previously the fastest female marathoner of all time, and held the Women's World Marathon Record with a time of 2:15:25 for 16 years from 2003 to 2019 when it was broken by Brigid Kosgei. Radcliffe is a former world champion in the marathon, half marathon and cross country. She has also been European champion over 10,000 metres and in cross country. Brigid Jepchirchir Kosgei (born 20 February 1994) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in the marathon. She won the 2018 and 2019 Chicago Marathons, the 2019 and 2020 London Marathons and the 2021 Tokyo Marathon. Kosgei is the current marathon world record holder for women running in a mixed-sex race, with a time of 2:14:04 achieved on 13 October 2019 at the Chicago Marathon. The women's 800 metres event at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place between 17–20 August at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange, Olympic Stadium. Summary As the final started, Caster Semenya running in lane 3 gained a slight edge on the turn, deceptive as Margaret Wambui in lane 4 was the slowest around the turn. Francine Niyonsaba converged from lane 5 and the two assumed the lead down the backstretch. Semenya taking the curb as they began the turn, Niyonsaba on her outside shoulder with Maryna Arzamasava behind Niyonsaba, Melissa Bishop and Lynsey Sharp stacking up behind Semenya. 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships
The 16th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics were held between March 17 and 20, 2016 in Portland, Oregon, United States. The event did not feature Russia. Following a WADA investigation into widespread and institutional doping practices in Russian athletics, the IAAF provisionally suspended Russia's membership of the organisation in November 2015, effectively excluding the country both from hosting events and entering competitions. 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships – Women's 800 Metres
The women's 800 metres at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships took place on March 19 and 20, 2016. Before the qualifying round here, Francine Niyonsaba had never run indoors. In the final, Ajee' Wilson took the lead at the break, with Margaret Nyairera Wambui following. Inexperienced at indoor strategy, Niyonsaba was in a frustrating position, blocked by the larger athletes ahead of her, boxed in, exchanging elbows with Habitam Alemu and Laura Roesler at her heels. On the second lap, Wambui got around Wilson to take the lead. Niyonsaba had had enough of this frustration, dropping behind Alemu then bouncing out to lane 2 running around the field into the lead, her third 200 so fast she opened up a 3-metre gap. From there, Niyonsaba simply held the gap all the way to the finish, with Wambui trying her hardest to make up the gap.
