Tiger Hill (; Suzhou Wu: Hou chieu, ) is a hill in Suzhou, China. It is a tourist destination that is known for its natural environment and historic sites. The hill's name is said to come from the fact it looks like a crouching tiger. Another legend states that a white tiger appeared on the hill to guard it following the burial of King Helü. The hill is also sometimes referred to in parallel with "Lion Mountain", another hill near Suzhou which resembles a sitting lion. Tiger Hill (also called Point 5062) is a mountain in the Drass-Kargil area of Ladakh, India. It is one of the highest peaks in the area and was the subject of a battle during the 1999 Kargil War. Strategic relevance Since Tiger Hill is the highest peak in the sector, it overlooks National Highway 1D, a road that connects Srinagar to Kargil, and is the main supply route of the Kargil sector. Any enemy atop the peak would have a direct line of sight onto the headquarters of India's 56 Brigade, the main Indian unit in the area, and as well as a 25 km stretch of highway, thus hindering the movement of troops and supplies. The peak also offered a surveillance point onto other nearby peaks. Battle Tiger Hill was illegally captured by elements of the Pakistan Army's Northern Light Infantry during Kargil War. SS Tiger Hill was a cargo ship that was one of the major vessels involved in the Aliyah Bet movement. Early history The ''Tiger Hill'', a 1,481-ton ship, was built in 1887 by Archibald McMillan & Son Ltd., Dumbarton, Scotland. The cargo vessel was originally built for the Panhellenic Steamship Co. (Navigation a Vapeur Panhéllenique) of Piraeus, Greece and sailed as the ''SS Thrace'' in the period 1887-1910. It then went through various names and owners until it was renamed as the ''SS Tiger Hill'' and was owned by the General Steamship Company of Panama and sailed under a Panamanian flag. However the crew was Greek. Last Voyage The ship sailed from Constanţa, Romania on August 3, 1939 laden with between 750-800 Jewish refugees with a destination of the Palestine Mandate. The refugees were overwhelmingly of Czech, Austrian and German origin (being the three territories the Nazis then controlled) plus some from the Free City of Danzig.
