Hermann Tietz
Hermann Tietz (born 29 April 1837, in Birnbaum an der Warthe near Posen (today Międzychód, Poland), died on 3 May 1907 in Berlin) was a German-Jewish merchant, co-founder of the Tietz Department Store. He was buried in the Weißensee Cemetery. Life Tietz, co-founder of the Tietz Department Store, was the first to carry out the idea of the department store in Germany. In 1882, the first department store of Tietz was opened in Gera (Thuringia, Germany) by his nephew Oskar Tietz. Oskar's brother Leonhard Tietz later founded his own chain store ("Kaufhof"). After stores in smaller towns like Bamberg, Erfurt, Rostock, Stralsund and Wismar had been successful, Tietz established his first department store in Berlin. In 1900, Herrmann Tietz opened a store in Leipziger Straße, where it was located close to the department store Wertheim, the biggest store in Europe at the time. Leonhard Tietz
Leonhard Tietz (March 3 1849 - November 14 1914) was a German department store entrepreneur and art collector of Jewish origin. Biography Born in Birnbaum an der Warthe, Province of Posen, Prussia (today Międzychód, Poland), Leonhard Tietz was the brother of Oskar Tietz and a founding member of the Tietz Department store dynasty. On 14 August 1879, he opened his first department store in Stralsund, with the idea of selling high quality products at fixed prices for cash. He was the first to introduce a money back guarantee. From 1891, a shop of his was to be found in Cologne. In 1905, his enterprise was transformed into a joint stock company. Art collector Tietz owned an art collection which included paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. Oscar Tietz
Oscar Tietz (18 April 1858 – 17 January 1923) was a Jewish-German businessman (''Unternehmer''). He was born in Birnbaum/Warthe, Posen. The brother of Leonhard Tietz, and a nephew of Hermann Tietz, he joined his uncle's department store concern, in Berlin, Tietz Department Store (Elberfeld). Oscar Tietz died in Klosters, Switzerland at age 64. Legacy When the Nazis came to power the departments stores the Tietz founded were Aryanized, that is forcibly transferred to non-Jewish owners. The Tietz department stores became part of Hertie, KaDeWe. Postwar claims were filed by the Tietz family concerning the expropriation of property under the Nazis. Tietz Syndrome
Tietz syndrome, also called Tietz albinism-deafness syndrome or albinism and deafness of Tietz, is an autosomal dominant congenital disorder characterized by deafness and leucism. It is caused by a mutation in the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) gene. Tietz syndrome was first described in 1963 by Walter Tietz (1927–2003) a German Physician working in California. Presentation Tietz syndrome is characterized by profound hearing loss from birth, white hair and pale skin (hair color may darken over time to blond or red). The hearing loss is caused by abnormalities of the inner ear (sensorineural hearing loss) and is present from birth. Individuals with Tietz syndrome often have skin and hair color that is lighter than those of other family members. Tietz syndrome also affects the eyes. Gerold Tietz (November 11, 1941, in near Dauba, Sudetenland, Germany July 24, 2009, in Esslingen, Germany) was a German author. Biography Gerold Tietz was born in Bohemia. As a child he and his family were banished. They first moved to the federal state of Bavaria in Germany, and later to Baden-Württemberg. He studied history, politics and French in Tübingen, Berlin and Paris. Gerold Tietz held a doctor's degree in history. Kulturkaufhaus Tietz
The Kulturkaufhaus Tietz is a cultural centre in Chemnitz, sometimes also called Cultural Department Store. In 1913 the house was built by Wilhelm Kreis. During World War II it was used as a department store by the Kaufhaus Tietz (Department Store of Tietz). In the 1990s the label Kaufhof had a shopping centre there. After a massive restoration of the building, in 2004 it was re-opened as "DAStietz". Since then it contains some shops (e.g. a bakery, a Fair Trade Shop, a bookshop and so on).
