Tiddas (novel)
''Tiddas'' is a novel by Anita Heiss published in 2014. The title ''Tiddas'' is an Aboriginal term for "women who are like sisters". The book is about five women who have been friends since childhood who come together for book club meetings. Reception Dianne Dempsey of the ''Sydney Morning Herald'' comments "While ''Tiddas'' may at times have a didactic tone, it is this political subtext, the subversive nature of the book, that provides any interest or edge." Laura Brodnik of ''bmag'' says that "it's also a love letter to the city of Brisbane." Lou Heinrich of ''lip'' states that it is "depicting urban Aboriginal women in an easily consumable book." Adaptation Heiss was commissioned to adapt the book for the stage by La Boite Theatre Company, Brisbane Festival and Queensland Performing Arts Centre. It premiered in 2022. Anita Heiss
Anita Marianne Heiss (born 1968) is an Aboriginal Australian author, poet, cultural activist and social commentator. She is an advocate for Indigenous Australian literature and literacy, through her writing for adults and children and her membership of boards and committees. Early life and education Heiss was born in Sydney in 1968, and is a member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales. Her mother, Elsie Williams, was born at Erambie Mission, Cowra in Wiradjuri country, while her father, Josef Heiss, was born in St Michael in the Lungau, Salzburg, Austria. Heiss was educated at St Clare's College, Waverley, then at the University of New South Wales, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1989. After a cadetship at the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (later AusAID) in Canberra, she returned to UNSW to complete an honours degree in History in 1991. La Boite Theatre is an Australian theatre company based in Brisbane, Queensland. La Boite was established in 1925 and is Australia’s longest continuously running theatre company. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (also known as QPAC) is part of the Queensland Cultural Centre and is located on the corner of Melbourne Street and Grey Street in Brisbane's South Bank, Queensland, South Bank precinct. Opened in 1985, it includes the Lyric Theatre, Concert Hall, Playhouse and Cremorne Theatre.
