Yungchen Lhamo
Yungchen Lhamo (Tibetan: དབྱངས་ཅན་ལྷ་མོ, ''lhamo'' meaning "goddess of song") is a Tibetan singer-songwriter living in the United States. She won the ARIA Award for Best World Music Album in 1995 and was then signed by Peter Gabriel's Real World record label. Life and career Lhamo's name means "goddess of song" (''lhamo''), a name given to her by a Buddhist monk at birth. Lhamo left Tibet in 1989 to make a pilgrimage to Dharamsala. She was inspired to reach out to the world through her music. She moved to Australia in 1993, then to New York City in 2000. Lhamo's Australian debut album, '' Tibetan Prayer'', produced by John Prior, won the ARIA Award for Best World Music Album in 1995. The success of that record led to her signing with Peter Gabriel's Real World label. John David Prior is an Australian musician, composer and producer recognized for his work with Matt Finish, Adrian Belew (King Crimson), Mick Taylor (The Rolling Stones), Roy Buchanan, Champion Jack Dupree, New Theatre, Coca-Cola, '' The Great Outdoors'', Iota, Wicked Beat Sound System, Kevin Borich and Dale Barlow. The Ninth Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (generally known as the ARIA Music Awards or simply The ARIAS) was held on 20 October 1995 at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre. There had been a 18-month gap since the previous award ceremony which was moved to be "closer to the business end of the music industry's year" and so reflect that year's works. Presenters distributed 28 awards from 1060 eligible submissions. Big winners for the year were Silverchair with five awards and Tina Arena with four, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year – both first time they were won by a female. In addition to previous categories, the former category Best Pop/Dance Release was split into Best Pop Release and Best Dance Release. The ARIA Music Awards, ARIA Music Award for Best World Music Album, is an award presented within the Fine Arts Awards at the annual ARIA Music Awards. It was inaugurated in ARIA Music Awards of 1995, 1995 as Best Folk/World/Traditional Release. The ARIA Awards recognise "the many achievements of Australians, Aussie artists across all music genres", and have been given by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) since 1987. Album recordings by a Musical ensemble, group or solo artist are eligible. The award is handed out for an Indigenous music, indigenous, Ethnic music, ethnic, Folk music, folk or Ethnomusicology, cross-cultural recording, and cannot be entered into any other genre category.
