History The hospital was established in 1861 with the name of London Christian Church Hospital. Jin Xianzhai, the well-known oncologist, set up the first tumor ward in the hospital in 1952. In 1972, the hospital became a specialized cancer hospital with 341 beds. In 1977, the Institute of Cancer Research was established with eight departments. Today, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital is one of the largest bases for cancer prevention, treatment, training and research in China. Jin Xianzhai
Hyen-taik Kimm (7 March 1904 – 4 September 1990) was a Korean-Chinese physician that specialized in oncology.; In China, he is remembered as the "Father of Chinese Oncology" for his many pioneering contributions to the field in the country as a researcher, educator, and practitioner. He was the first oncologist in China, created the first Chinese oncology journal, the ''Chinese Journal of Clinical Oncology'', and the first Chinese oncologist organization, the Anti-Cancer Society of China. In 1937, Kimm and C. Szeto made the first description of Kimura's disease. Early life and education Kimm was born on 7 March 1904 in Seoul, Korean Empire to an ethnic Korean family. The Institute of Cancer Research (the ICR) is a public research institute and a member institution of the University of London in London, United Kingdom, specialising in oncology. It was founded in 1909 as a research department of the Royal Marsden Hospital and joined the University of London in 2003. It has been responsible for a number of breakthrough discoveries, including that the basic cause of cancer is damage to DNA. The ICR occupies sites in Chelsea, Central London and Sutton, southwest London. The ICR provides both taught postgraduate degree programmes and research degrees and currently has around 340 students. Tianjin Medical University (TMU) () was founded in 1951; was the first medical institution approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China. Hsien-I Chu, a renowned endocrinologist, was the first president of the university. The current president is Shang Yongfeng. In December 1993, with the approval of the State Education Council, the Tianjin Medical College and the Tianjin Second Medical College were integrated into the Tianjin Medical University. In December 1996, the university was accepted into Project 211, becoming one of the 97 key institutions (9 medical institutions) given development priority by the State.
