Thylungra
Thylungra Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a sheep station in Queensland. Description The property is situated approximately north west of Quilpie and south east of Windorah. Neighbouring properties include the Milo and Budgerygar aggregation and Arleun Station that are all owned or leased by George Scott, the current owner of Thylungra. It is situated in the Channel Country on Kyabra Creek, a tributary of Cooper Creek. The property is predominantly open downs flood-out country with black soils to the south with large areas of gidyea stands interspersed with low sandhills. The north is mostly mulga country with remainder of the property being stony range country. The area is mostly Mitchell grass, Flinders grass, blue grass, bluebush, buttongrass, burr and neverfail on the floodplains. Patrick Durack
Patrick Durack (March 1834 – 20 January 1898) was a pastoral pioneer in Western Australia. His family were struggling tenant farmers from Magherareagh near Scarriff in County Clare, Ireland, who moved from Ireland to New South Wales in 1853. Two months after arriving in New South Wales, his father, Michael was killed accidentally. He settled his mother and siblings, and moved to Victoria, returning 18 months later with £1000. On 31 July 1862 Durack married Mary Costello, only daughter of Michael Costello, a native of County Tipperary, and his wife Mary Tully, a native of County Galway. Patrick and Mary had eight children (two of whom died in infancy), including Michael Durack. Goulburn provided insufficient outlets for Durack's energy, land hunger and organizing powers. Along with his brother Michael and brother-in-law John Costello (pastoralist), John Costello, they set out to establish a property in South West Queensland in 1863. South Galway Station
South Galway Station and often referred to as South Galway and also once known as Galway Downs is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station. Description It is located about south west of Windorah and east of Birdsville in the Channel Country of Queensland. The property occupies an area of of and is able to carry a herd of approximately 13,000 cattle. It is currently owned by the Australian Agricultural Company. Situated along Cooper Creek approximately half the property is flooded river country and about one quarter is rolling downs. The remaining quarter is a mix of spinifex, red sand, mulga and hard hilly country. History Initially established by Patrick and Michael Durack along with John Costello in 1873, the property was one of the first to be settled in the region. the area was struck by drought from 1897 to 1901. Argyle Downs
Argyle Downs is a pastoral lease and cattle station located about south east of Kununurra in the Kimberley region near the border of Western Australia and Northern Territory. It is operated by the Consolidated Pastoral Company. Description The station occupies an area of and is a mix of black soil plains and red basalt country with the Ord River and Lake Argyle situated on the western boundary. Currently the property annually turns off 7,500 head of cattle for live export to the south East Asia market. Stock horses are also bred and raised on the property for use on other stations. History The traditional owners of the area are the Malngin peoples. The area was settled in 1882 by Patrick and his brother Michael Durack, who arrived in the area after trekking across the north of the continent from Thylungra Station, their property on Coopers Creek in Queensland, where they left from in 1879 along with 7250 breeding cattle and 200 horses.
