Thurston Glacier
Thurston Glacier is a glacier about long which drains the south-eastern slopes of Mount Siple on Siple Island. The glacier trends eastward and then east-north-eastward to reach the northern shore of the island. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and United States Navy aerial photography, 1959–65. Discovery and naming The glacier was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Thomas R. Thurston, a United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP) meteorologist at Byrd Station in 1965. Thurstone
Louis Leon Thurstone (29 May 1887 – 29 September 1955) was an American pioneer in the fields of psychometrics and psychophysics. He conceived the approach to measurement known as the law of comparative judgment, and is well known for his contributions to factor analysis. A ''Review of General Psychology'' survey, published in 2002, ranked Thurstone as the 88th most cited psychologist of the 20th century, tied with John Garcia, James J. USS ''Thurston'' (AP-77) was a troop transport that served with the United States Navy during World War II. She was named after counties in Nebraska and Washington. ''Thurston'' was laid down under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 134) as SS ''Delsantos'' (sometimes styled as ''Del Santos'') on 9 December 1941 at Kearney, New Jersey, by the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, for the Mississippi Shipping Company; launched on 4 April 1942; and delivered on 11 July 1942. The ship was acquired by the Navy from the War Shipping Administration under a bare boat charter on 13 September 1942 and was renamed ''Dauphin'' and designated AP-77 on 16 September. However, to avoid confusion with a Canadian ship, HMCS Dauphin, the ship was again renamed on 18 September, this time as ''Thurston''. Thurston Gardens are the botanical gardens of Fiji. They used to be known as the Suva Botanical Gardens but its name was changed in honour of the fifth Governor of Fiji, Sir John Bates Thurston, who was Governor from February 1888 to March 1897. Thurston Gardens is located in central Suva, between Albert Park and the Government House. History Thurston Gardens are built on the site of the original town of Suva that was burned in 1843 in one of the bloodiest fights in Fiji's history. Many of the inhabitants were killed and eaten by the people of Rewa. Thurston Island
Thurston Island is an ice-covered, glacially dissected island, long, wide and in area, lying a short way off the northwest end of Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. It is the third-largest island of Antarctica, after Alexander Island and Berkner Island. The island was discovered from the air by Rear Admiral Byrd on February 27, 1940, who named it for W. Harris Thurston, a New York textile manufacturer, designer of the windproof "Byrd Cloth" and sponsor of Antarctic expeditions. Thurston Island is separated from the mainland by Peacock Sound, which is occupied by the western portion of Abbot Ice Shelf. It divides Bellingshausen Sea to the east from Amundsen Sea to the west.
