M. Subramanian Namboodiri (1 March 1929 – 1 February 2019), commonly known by his pen name Thuppettan, was a Malayalam-language playwright from Kerala, India. Hailing from Panjal, a village in Thrissur district of Kerala, Thuppettan had been a drawing teacher at a local school. His father Ittiravi Namboodiri was a Vedic scholar who tried to reform the conservative practices of the Namboodiri community. Some of the most famous works of Thuppettan include ''Thanathu Lavanam'', ''Marumarunnu'', ''Vettakkarappayal'', ''Swaapaharanam Athava Ellarum Argentinayilekku'', ''Bhadrayanam'', ''Kalavastha'', ''Mohanasundarapaalam'', ''Double Act'' and ''Chakka''. Panjal (IAST: ''pāññāḷ'') is a village near Chelakkara, Thrissur district in the state of Kerala, India. The village is known for the Athirathram yāgam, held in 1975 and 2011. The yāgam is one of the oldest rituals of mankind in existence, and the ritual has only been maintained by small communities in India. A playwright or dramatist is a person who writes plays. Etymology The word "play" is from Middle English pleye, from Old English plæġ, pleġa, plæġa ("play, exercise; sport, game; drama, applause"). Thrissur (), formerly Trichur, also known by its historical name Thrissivaperur, is a city and the headquarters of the Thrissur district in Kerala, India. Namboodiri
The Nambudiri (), also transliterated as Nampoothiri, Nambūdiri, Namboodiri, Nampoothiri, and Nampūtiri, are a Malayali Brahmin caste, native to what is now the state of Kerala, India, where they constituted part of the traditional feudal elite, owning a large portion of the land in the region of Malabar until the Kerala Land Reforms starting in 1957, and intermarrying with the Nair monarchs and aristocracy through sambandham.
