The ''Three Rivers Rambler'' is an excursion train in Knoxville, Tennessee along the Tennessee River. Volunteer Landing
Volunteer Landing is a public park and riverwalk along the Tennessee River in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is below the Gay Street Bridge. History The location of the park is the site of the Treaty of Holston. In 1988, a 50-member waterfront task force was created to analyze the waterfront area along the Tennessee River. Per the recommendations of this task force, a three-phase project to develop Volunteer Landing began in 1995 and continued through 1996. Volunteer Landing was completed in September 1997. Upon this completion, Volunteer Landing had a boardwalk, a central pavilion and plaza, a pedestrian bridge, and two new public parks. In April 1999, Gateway Regional Visitor Center which highlighted the region's nature and technology was opened. In Spring 2000, the 140-boat slip Volunteer Landing Marina, was completed. Caboose
A caboose is a crewed North American railroad car coupled at the end of a freight train. Cabooses provide shelter for crew at the end of a train, who were formerly required in switching and shunting, keeping a lookout for load shifting, damage to equipment and cargo, and overheating axles. Originally flatcars fitted with cabins or modified box cars, they later became purpose-built with projections above or to the sides of the car to allow crew to observe the train from shelter. The caboose also served as the conductor's office, and on long routes included sleeping accommodations and cooking facilities. A similar railroad car, the brake van, was used on British and Commonwealth railways (the role has since been replaced by the crew car in Australia). On trains not fitted with continuous brakes, brake vans provided a supplementary braking system, and they helped keep chain couplings taut. Schenectady Locomotive Works
The Schenectady Locomotive Works built railroad locomotives from its founding in 1848 through its merger into American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1901. After the 1901 merger, ALCO made the Schenectady plant its headquarters in Schenectady, New York. One of the better-known locomotives to come out of the Schenectady shops was Central Pacific Railroad type 4-4-0 No. 60, the ''Jupiter'' (built in September 1868), one of two steam locomotives to take part in the "Golden Spike Ceremony" to celebrate the completion of the First transcontinental railroad. Southern Railway 154 is a 2-8-0 G class steam locomotive built in 1890 by Schenectady Locomotive Works for Southern Railway. History The locomotive was originally delivered in 1890 to the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway (ETV&G) as #466. In 1894, ETV&G was merged with the Richmond and Danville Railroad to form the Southern Railway and 466 was renumbered to 154. During the locomotive's service life, #154 has worked on the Knoxville to Bristol and the Knoxville to Asheville divisions of the Southern, the engine was also leased to the Gloucester Lumber Company in Asheville in 1946 and has worked on the Murphy Branch. On at least one occasion (Autumn 1951), #154 was rented by the Smoky Mountain Railroad for temporary service as a road engine. The Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad (SMRR) is a standard gauge railroad that circles the perimeter of Stone Mountain Park in a loop, and provides views of the mountain en route. History The railroad utilizes what was originally an industrial spur built in 1869 by the Stone Mountain Granite Company to serve quarries at the foot of the Stone Mountain, with a connection to the Georgia Railroad's main line in Stone Mountain Village. Louisiana Eastern Railroad
The Louisiana Eastern Railroad (LE) was a proposed railroad that was to serve as an alternate line bypassing the congested rail lines in New Orleans, Louisiana. The railroad was envisioned by Paulsen Spence in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and while most US railroads had or began to replace their steam locomotives with diesel locomotives, the LE was to operate exclusively with steam locomotives which Spence had collected over time. He died in 1961, and the railroad had never fully materialized.
