''Three Coins in the Fountain'' is a 1954 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Jean Negulesco from a screenplay by John Patrick, based on the 1952 novel '' Coins in the Fountain'' by John H. History In its first film season, 1927–28, this award (like others such as the acting awards) was not tied to a specific film; all of the work by the nominated cinematographers during the qualifying period was listed after their names. Background The melody was written by Jule Styne with lyrics by Sammy Cahn. It was written for the romance film, '' Three Coins in the Fountain'' and refers to the act of throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome while making a wish. Each of the film's three stars (Clifton Webb, Dorothy McGuire, and Jean Peters) performs this act.
