Those Who Dare
''Those Who Dare'' is a 1924 American silent drama film directed by John B. O'Brien and starring John Bowers, Marguerite De La Motte, and Joseph J. Dowling. Though some reference books consider it a horror film, it is not known how overt the voodoo element was, since the film no longer exists. The film co-stars a couple of actors however who were associated with the 1920s horror film genre, Sheldon Lewis (who starred in ''Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'' (1920 Haydon film)), and Cesare Gravina (who starred with Lon Chaney in ''The Man Who Laughs'', 1928). Director O'Brien quit directing in 1926, and spent the last ten years of his life acting in bit parts. Plot Captain Manning, the owner of the ship ''The Swallow'', is ordered to remove it from a town's harbor because it has the reputation for being cursed. John Bryn Williams (born 1977), known as John B, is an English disc jockey and electronic music producer. He is widely recognised for his eccentric clothing and wild hair and his production of several cutting edge drum and bass tracks. Claire McDowell ( MacDowell; November 2, 1877 – October 23, 1966) was an American actress of the silent era. She appeared in 350 films between 1908 and 1945. Early years Claire MacDowell was born in New York City on November 2, 1877, the daughter of Eugene A. MacDowell and Fanny Reeves. Her aunt, actress Fanny Davenport, gave her early training in acting. Fanny Davenport's second husband was Eugene's brother Melbourne MacDowell. Career When she was 17, she was an understudy in a theatrical company headed by Charles Frohman. Still something of a youthful beauty, McDowell appeared in numerous short, early feature films. She graduated to playing character and mother types. Jessie Graham Flower is a pseudonym for American author Josephine Chase. Born about 1878 in Pennsylvania to Edward H. Chase and Mary Arrner Chase. Chase was the author of the popular '' Grace Harlowe'' series of 27 books for girls, written between 1910 and 1924.Series Books The books fall into four separate series, including a high school series, college series, ''Overseas'' series, and ''Overland Riders'' series. Frank Spottiswoode Aitken (16 April 1868 – 26 February 1933) was a Scottish-American actor of the silent era. He played Dr. Cameron in D. W. Griffith's epic drama ''The Birth of a Nation''. Early years Aitken was born 16 April 1868 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Acting In his book, ''The King of the Movies: Film Pioneer Siegmund Lubin'', Joseph P. Eckhardt wrote that Aitken was "trained as a Shakespearean actor, with many years of experience under his belt." His film debut came in 1911. He eventually appeared in 81 feature films between 1914 and 1927. Businessman Aitken was one of the first actors to settle in Los Angeles when the film industry was still at its strongest in New York. He invested most of his earnings in real estate, buying up orange groves around what would become Hollywood.
