Thornton-le-Moor
Thornton-le-Moor is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England, situated equidistantly from the towns of Thirsk and Northallerton. History The Romans built two roads from a camp to the south at Thornton-le-Street. The modern A168 roughly follows the route of one road towards Northallerton before it headed to a fort at ''Cataractonium'' ( Catterick). The village name means the "thorn-tree settlement on the moor" derived from the Old English, ''þorn'' meaning a hawthorn tree, ''tūn'', a farmstead and ''mōr'', marsh or barren upland. Recorded as Torentun in the 11th century and Thornton in Mora or Thornton super Moram from the 13th to the 15th centuries, the village was probably held before the Norman Conquest of England by Edmund but by 1086 was recorded in the ''Domesday Book'' as belonging to Robert Malet. South Otterington
South Otterington is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It is located on the A167 road south of Northallerton and on the east bank of the River Wiske. History ''Otterinctune'' in the ''Allerton hundred'' is mentioned in the ''Domesday Book''. The manor was split between Egelfride and Haldor at the time of the Norman invasion and subsequently passed to the Crown. Part of the manor was granted to Robert Brus, whose family held it until 1242 when it was granted to Byland Abbey who held it until the dissolution. Another part of the manor was granted to the Fossard family who held it until 1279 when it was passed to Richard Malbiche. At some point in the early 17th century, most of the lands of the manor were in the possession of the Talbot family of Thornton-le-Moor. Thornton-le-Street is a village and parochial and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is part of the civil parish of Thornton-le-Moor and Thornton-le-Street for District purposes. As the population remained less 100 at the 2011 Census details are included in the civil parish of Thornton-le-Moor. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to have been 90. Thornton-le-Street is situated about north of Thirsk and about south-east of the county town of Northallerton. Newby Wiske is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the River Wiske, about five miles north-west of Thirsk. History The village has always belonged to the manor of Kirby Wiske. The manor was split between the ''de Maunby'' and ''de Holtby'' families in the 13th and 14th century. The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. The putting-out system is a means of subcontracting work. Historically, it was also known as the workshop system and the domestic system. In putting-out, work is contracted by a central agent to subcontractors who complete the project via remote work. It was used in the English and American textile industries, in shoemaking, lock-making trades, and making parts for small firearms from the Industrial Revolution until the mid-19th century. After the invention of the sewing machine in 1846, the system lingered on for the making of ready-made men's clothing. Turnpike Trusts
Turnpike trusts were bodies set up by individual acts of Parliament, with powers to collect road tolls for maintaining the principal roads in Britain from the 17th but especially during the 18th and 19th centuries. At the peak, in the 1830s, over 1,000 trusts administered around of turnpike road in England and Wales, taking tolls at almost 8,000 toll-gates and side-bars. Yarm, also referred to as Yarm-on-Tees, is a market town and civil parish in the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees, North Yorkshire, England. It was previously a port town before the industry moved down the River Tees to more accessible settlements nearer to the sea. A tollhouse or toll house is a building with accommodation for a toll collector, beside a tollgate on a toll road, canal, or toll bridge. History Many tollhouses were built by turnpike trusts in England, Wales and Scotland during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
