Thornlie, Western Australia
Thornlie is a large residential suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, located south-east of the city's central business district. It is a part of the City of Gosnells local government area. The Canning River runs through the northern side of the suburb. Since the 1950s the suburb has developed in approximately five stages; north-east Thornlie (1950s–60s), south Thornlie (1970s–80s), Crestwood (1970s), Castle Glen (1980s) and Forest Lakes (1980s to present). History Captain Peter Pégus was the original settler of the area now known as Thornlie, which he had called "Coleraine" when granted the land in 1829. Prior to this the area would have been used by the indigenous Noongar population. In 1834 Pégus' premises and belongings were burned in a fire that was to prove the end of his settlement. Electoral District Of Gosnells
Gosnells was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia. It was in existence from 1977 to 1989 and from 2008 to 2017. The seat was named after the suburb of Gosnells, and was located in Perth's southeastern suburbs. Gosnells was a safe seat for the Labor Party for most of its existence. History Gosnells was first created for the 1977 state election and abolished ahead of the 1989 state election. It was largely replaced by the district of Thornlie, which sitting Gosnells MP Yvonne Henderson contested and won. Gosnells was held at all times by the Labor Party. A new seat named Gosnells was created for the 2008 state election when the number of metropolitan seats was increased in accordance with the new one vote one value legislation. The Canning River (Djarlgarra in Nyungar) is a major tributary of the Swan River in the South West Land Division of Western Australia. It is home to much wildlife including dolphins, pelicans, swans and many other bird species. Baseball Park (Perth)
Empire Ballpark is a baseball stadium in Perth, Australia. It was built in 2004, with a seating capacity of 1500 and standing room for a further 2500. This is the first baseball-exclusive stadium in Perth since the demolition of Parry Field in the mid-1990s. Baseball Park was the venue of the 2007 Claxton Shield, which ran from 19 to 27 January 2007. The facility was known as Barbagallo Ballpark between mid 2010 and mid 2015, until Perth Harley-Davidson purchased the naming rights to the Stadium in 2017 for a 3-year deal. Thornlie Railway Station
Thornlie Station is a railway station on the Transperth network. It is the terminus of the Thornlie spur of the Armadale Line, from Perth Station serving the suburb of Thornlie, Western Australia. Under construction is the Thornlie-Cockburn Link which will link to Cockburn Central railway station along the Mandurah line via two new stations, Nicholson Road railway station and Ranford Road railway station. Roe Highway
Roe Highway is a limited-access highway and partial freeway in Perth, Western Australia, linking Kewdale with the city's north-eastern and south-western suburbs. The northern terminus is at Reid Highway and Great Northern Highway in Middle Swan, and the southern terminus is with Murdoch Drive at the Kwinana Freeway interchange in Bibra Lake. Roe Highway, in addition to Reid Highway, form State Route 3, a partial ring road around the outer suburbs of the Perth metropolitan area. Roe Highway also forms part of National Highway 94 from Great Eastern Highway Bypass to Great Eastern Highway, and National Highway 95 from Great Eastern Highway to Great Northern Highway. Nat Harper
Nathaniel White Harper (18 March 1865 – 3 January 1954) was an Australian politician and businessman. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1910 until 1914, representing the seats of Beverley and Pingelly. He was also the maternal grandfather of politicians David Grayden and Bill Grayden, the latter of whom served for almost 50 years in State and Federal politics. Biography Harper was born near Ballymena, Northern Ireland, to John Harper, a farmer, and Margaret (née White), and was educated locally for six months in the year while working on his father's potato fields. Walter Padbury
Walter Padbury (22 December 1820 – 18 April 1907) was a British-born Australian pioneer, politician and philanthropist. Early Life Padbury was born in Stonesfield in the English county of Oxfordshire on 22 December 1820. At the age of 10, Padbury was brought by his father to Fremantle, Western Australia, aboard the on 25 February 1830, before his father's death in July of that year. Padbury was left in the care of a married couple, who absconded with his inheritance, leaving Padbury as a homeless orphan. He held multiple occupations in an attempt to support himself, including shepherding near York for a £10 salary at the age of 16. By 1863, Padbury had saved enough money to arrange for his mother and other family members to immigrate to Australia, becoming one of the first settlers in North West Australia, squatting on the territory of the indigenous Nyamal people surrounding the De Grey River.
