Thorniewood
Thorniewood is one of the twenty-one wards used to elect members of the North Lanarkshire Council. It elects three councillors and covers the Viewpark, Tannochside and Birkenshaw areas. Its south-west boundary is the M74 motorway bordering the Bothwell and Uddingston ward of South Lanarkshire (the localities of Thorniewood were often historically considered parts of Uddingston, particularly before the two parts were divided between the districts of Hamilton and Motherwell in 1975). A 2017 national review caused the territory to be reduced, the east boundary moving westwards from the A725 bypass resulting in the loss of the Fallside neighbourhood and the unpopulated Righead Industrial Estate; however, housebuilding elsewhere meant the decrease in the electorate was minimal. 2017 North Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on 4 May 2017, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election utilised twenty-one wards with 77 Councillors being elected. This represented an increase of 7 seats and 1 additional ward when compared to 2012. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. The election saw the Scottish National Party overtake Labour as the largest party on the council. Despite the SNP winning the most seats and most votes, North Lanarkshire was run by a Labour administration supported by the Scottish Conservatives. 2012 North Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on 3 May 2012 on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the twenty wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 70 Councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. The election saw Labour retain their traditional position as the largest party on the Council as they gained 1 seat from 2007 and retained their overall majority. The Scottish National Party also increased their representation and remained in second place on the authority with 3 net gains. Both the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrats were wiped out losing their single Council seats. Independents saw their seat numbers fall from 5 to 2 while former SNP Councillor, Alan O'Brien, was elected for the Cumbernauld Independent Councillors Alliance. Viewpark
Viewpark is an area in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Situated immediately north-east of Uddingston (but on the other side of the M74 motorway), Viewpark is west of Bellshill. It has an estimated population of 13,916 in 2016, a figure which also includes the smaller adjoining neighbourhoods of Birkenshaw, Bellziehill, Calderbraes, Fallside and Tannochside under the Thorniewood ward of the local council. Elections to North Lanarkshire Council took place on 5 May 2022 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. The election used the 21 wards created following the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland's 5th Review, with 77 councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. At the last election in 2017, the Scottish National Party (SNP) won the most seats, but Labour ran the council. Steven Bonnar (born 27 August 1981) is a Scottish National Party politician who has served as Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill (UK Parliament constituency), Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill since 2019 United Kingdom general election, 2019. Raised in North Lanarkshire, Bonnar served as an SNP councillor in the Thorniewood ward of North Lanarkshire from 2015 to 2020. Hugh Gaffney
Hugh Lawrence Gaffney (born 10 August 1963) is a Scottish Labour politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill from 2017 to 2019. He was a Member of North Lanarkshire Council from 2017 to 2019. Early life Gaffney was raised in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire; he has three brothers and two sisters. 2007 North Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on 3 May 2007, the same day as the other Scottish local government elections and the Scottish Parliament general election. The election was the first one using 20 new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, each ward will elect three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system a form of proportional representation. The new wards replace 70 single-member wards which used the plurality (first past the post) system of election. Labour managed to retain control of the council, something which the party failed to do in many other parts of Scotland. Overall they lost 14 seats, most of which went to the Scottish National Party, although the individual seats won by the Conservative Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrats were noteworthy in that these parties had never been represented on North Lanarkshire Council before. Tannochside
Tannochside is a settlement approximately south-east of Glasgow, Scotland. Although historically considered part of Uddingston, it lies within a separate local authority area: Tannochside is contained within the boundaries of North Lanarkshire council (situated between the Birkenshaw and Viewpark neighbourhoods in the Thorniewood ward), whereas the original village of Uddingston is in South Lanarkshire. Tannochside is part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. It is often debated as to where the borders lie between Tannochside and other nearby areas. Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) using the first-past-the-post voting system. It was created for the 2005 general election, covering the whole area of the Coatbridge and Chryston constituency and parts of the Hamilton North and Bellshill seat. A small area in the eastern side of Coatbridge lies within the Airdrie and Shotts constituency. Traditionally, the area served by the seat and its predecessors was the safest Labour area in Scotland. Bothwell and Uddingston is one of the twenty wards used to elect members of the South Lanarkshire Council. It elects three councillors. As its name suggests, the ward's territory comprises the adjoining suburban villages of Bothwell and Uddingston, bounded by the River Clyde to the west and south, and the M74 motorway to the north and east bordering the Thorniewood ward of North Lanarkshire (the localities of which were often historically considered parts of Uddingston, particularly before the two parts were divided between the districts of Hamilton and Motherwell in 1975); these boundaries were unaffected by a 2017 national review.
