Thorncliffe is a residential neighbourhood in the northwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. It is bounded by 64 Avenue to the north, Deerfoot Trail to the east, McKnight Boulevard to the south and 14 Street West and Nose Hill Park to the west. Thorncliffe was established in 1954. Thorncliff is a neighbourhood in west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada located immediately to the south of West Edmonton Mall. According to the neighbourhood description in the City of EdmontoMap Utility the neighbourhood was designed to control urban sprawl and improve the delivery of services. Whitemud Drive, located just to the south of the neighbourhood, provides good access to destinations on the south side, including the University of Alberta, Fort Edmonton Park, and the Southgate Centre shopping mall. According to the 2001 federal census, development of the neighbourhood began in the 1960s when nearly one in five (17.2%) of residences were constructed. However, the bulk of residential construction didn't occur until the 1970s when roughly six out of ten (59.8%) of residences were built. Many people unfamiliar with this area and have incorrect maps mistakenly believe that it is called Birch Haven. Birchaven1 borders Trout Lake and extends to Wallace Road. Downtown North Bay's Downtown is located along the shore of Lake Nipissing, between the Gateway and Ferris neighbourhoods. Thorncliffe is a small village in Staffordshire, England, straddling the Staffordshire Moorlands and Peak District National Park. By 1600 the name Thorncliffe had replaced the settlement's earlier name, Thorntileg, meaning "clearing in thorn trees". The nearest towns to the village are Leek (2 miles), Buxton (10 miles) and Macclesfield (14 miles). The village of Thorncliffe has only one pub, the Red Lion Inn, which dates from 1787, when it was called the Reform Inn. Thorncliffe Park
Thorncliffe Park is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in the former Borough of East York. The City of Toronto recognizes Thorncliffe Park's boundaries as the Don River on the south side; Leaside Bridge, Millwood Road, and Laird Drive on the west side; the West Don River on the east side; and Eglinton Avenue East on the north side. History The site of Thorncliffe Park was a farm owned by Robert T. Davies, the wealthy founder of the Dominion Brewing Co. An avid participant in horse racing, under the banner of Thorncliffe Stable, he raced both Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses. After Davies' death in 1916 his estate sold the property to a group of investors from Baltimore, Maryland, who built the Thorncliffe Park Raceway racetrack. The track was home to thoroughbred horse racing and harness racing from 1917 until 1952 when it was sold for real estate development. Thorncliffe Park Raceway was a Toronto-area racetrack that operated from 1917 until 1952. It was located east of Millwood Road, south of Eglinton Avenue East and the CPR's railroad tracks. It was the first home of the Prince of Wales Stakes. The name is retained today by the Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood. History The site of Thorncliffe Park Raceway was originally owned by John Taylor and members of the Taylor family, who established mills, a brewery and a brickyard along the Don River (Ontario). Robert T. Davies, the wealthy founder of the Dominion Brewing Company and related to the Taylor family by marriage, acquired the property in the late 19th century and renamed it Thorncliffe Farm. The name of the farm, and later the racetrack, was inspired by Thorn Cliff, a house built on the west side of the Don River by a member of the third generation of the Taylor family.
