Thornborough, Buckinghamshire
Thornborough is a village and civil parish in north Buckinghamshire, England, around east of Buckingham. History The village name is Anglo-Saxon in origin, and means "hill where thorn trees grow". It was recorded as ''Torneberge'' in the Domesday Book of 1086, as ''Tornburuwe'' in the 13th century, and as ''Thornborowe'' in the 16th century. An Inclosure Act for Thornborough was passed in 1797. The village has the earthworks of a Roman village on its western border, in between Thornborough Bridge and the main village. Near the bridge on the north side of the road are the Thornborough Mounds, two tumuli in which Roman remains were found in 1839. They are a scheduled monument. Buildings There is a manor house with associated tithe barns in the centre of the village next to the pond. The village church, St Mary, is one of very few in Britain to have steel bells. Thornborough is a village in Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is about south of Bedale and west of the A1(M) motorway. Thornborough is in the West Tanfield parish. The Thornborough Henges ancient monuments are situated south and west of the village. The village lies just to the south of the B6267 road, which connects the A6055 in the east, with the A6108 road at Masham. The village is served by two buses a day in each direction between Ripon and Masham. When the Masham Branch of the North Eastern Railway was open, station would have been the nearest railway station to Thornborough. Now the nearest railway station is at . The village is not mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the first recorded use of ''Thornborough'' was in 1198 as ''Thornbergh'', meaning Thorn Hill. Thornborough Henges
The Thornborough Henges are an unusual ancient monument complex that includes the three aligned henges that give the site its name. The complex is located near the village of Thornborough, close to the town of Masham in North Yorkshire, England. The complex includes many large ancient structures including a cursus, henges, burial grounds and settlements. They are thought to have been part of a Neolithic and Bronze Age 'ritual landscape' comparable to Salisbury Plain and date from between 3500 and 2500 BC. This monument complex has been called 'The Stonehenge of the North'. Historic England considers its landscape comparable in ceremonial importance to better known sites such as Stonehenge, Avebury, and Orkney. Thornborough is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Thornborough had a population of 9 people. It rose to prominence in the 1870s as a gold mining town in the Hodgkinson Minerals Area. Today, there are very few buildings remaining in the town. Geography The town of Kingsborough, another former mining town, is located to the north-east of the town of Thornborough. History Thornborough was named in 1876 after George Henry Thorn, the then Queensland Premier. By May 1877, the streets were laid out and named after pioneers of north Queensland, such as James Venture Mulligan and William (Billy) McLeod and Muirson. Thornborough Provisional School opened circa 1878. In 1909 it became Thornborough State School. It operated as a half-time school in conjunction with Dimbulah School (meaning the schools shared a single teacher) in 1918 and then closed. It reopened in 1920 and closed on 1925.
