Thor O. Hannevig
Thor Olaf Hannevig (20 April 1891 – 17 February 1975) was a Norwegian shipmaster. During the Norwegian Campaign in 1940 he was in command of an army unit called the ''Telemark Infantry Regiment'', and this regiment was able to withstand the German forces until 5 May. Hannevig later acquired a legendary heroic status, and his story was the basis of the 1993 Norwegian film '' The Last Lieutenant''. Hannevig was born in Åsgårdstrand. He had taken an 8-months' officer's course in 1915. In addition to being a shipmaster, during his life he also owned a distillery, was an adventurer and a Freemason, and worked in a hotel, as a banker, a merchant, and a farmer. Åsgårdstrand
Åsgårdstrand is a small port town in Horten municipality, Vestfold, Norway. It is also the name of a former independent municipality and a center of trade. The town is situated 10 km south of Horten, 10 km north of Tønsberg and 100 km south of Oslo by the west coast of the Oslofjord. On 1 January 1965 Åsgårdstrand and Borre municipalities, plus a part of Sem were merged into the new municipality of Borre. By the time of the merger Åsgårdstrand had 488 inhabitants and was the smallest municipality in Norway. Åsgårdsstrand is a summer resort destination with a number of restored old homes. Vinje is a municipality in Telemark in the county of Vestfold og Telemark in Norway. It is part of the traditional regions of Upper Telemark and Vest-Telemark. The administrative center of the municipality is the village of Åmot. General information Name The municipality of Vinje (originally a parish) is named after the old ''Vinje'' farm (Old Norse: ''Vinjar''), since the first church was built there. The Battle of Vinjesvingen was a battle of the Norwegian campaign and took place in May 1940 in the Telemark county, Norway. It became one of the two last strongholds of Norwegian resistance in southern Norway during World War II, the other being Hegra Fortress. Background Under the command of Second Lieutenant Thor O. Hannevig, the Norwegians held their position against superior German forces until 5 May 1940. Hannevig managed to sneak great loads of arms, equipment and fuel from depots right in front of the German forces. The equipment was brought to Vinje and Vågsli in Telemark, where Hannevig established a unit which came to be known as Telemark Infantry Regiment. ''The Last Lieutenant'' ( no, Secondløitnanten) is a 1993 Norwegian film, directed by Hans Petter Moland and starring Espen Skjønberg. It was released in the USA with English subtitles. Plot The old sea-captain retires, but the next day German World War II occupation of Norway begins. He then kisses his wife good-bye and is off to Regiment HQ. There he finds a lack of leadership and morale that offends him. They even laugh at him and his out-dated uniform and discontinued second lieutenant officer-rank, that he had earned years before. He is sent with a few men to blow up a bridge. The young men laugh at him and generally ignore his advice. When the bridge fails to collapse, he does the job himself. He returns to HQ to find that its officers have voted to surrender. He leaves the HQ with a few men, taking trucks and supplies to continue the fight, often at odds with the remainder of army leadership. Skreia
Skreia is a village in Østre Toten Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. The village is located on the western shore of the large lake Mjøsa, about southeast of the village of Lena and about to the south of the village of Kapp. In the summers, there is a ferry from Skreia across the lake to the town of Hamar. The village has a population (2021) of 922 and a population density of . Skreia was the terminus of Skreiabanen railway line. The now-abandoned railway line once ran between Reinsvoll and Skreia.
