Thomson Railway Station
Thomson is a railway station on the Walhalla narrow gauge line in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, located where the line crossed the Thomson River. The station was situated on the section of line closed in 1944. The station reopened in 1995, and is now the headquarters of the Walhalla Goldfields Railway. The platform and wooden station building had been reconstructed at Thomson for use by WGR tourist trains as the current terminus. Walhalla Goldfields Railway
The Walhalla Goldfields Railway is a narrow gauge tourist railway located in the Thomson River and Stringers Creek valleys in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, near the former gold-mining town and tourist destination of Walhalla. History The Walhalla line was the last of four experimental narrow gauge lines of the Victorian Railways, the Moe-Walhalla railway commenced in 1904, but was not completed until 1910. The railway was expected to be a boon for Walhalla, which was in a state of decline with gold mining operations becoming uneconomical. The largest gold mining company closed in 1914. After the closure of the Walhalla mines, substantial timber traffic was carried from saw-mills around Erica until the late 1940s. Goods and passenger traffic declined, with the railway closed in sections from 1944 with the final section from Moe to Erica closed on 25 June 1954. Walhalla Railway Line
The Walhalla railway line was a narrow gauge railway located in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The line ran from Moe to the former gold-mining town and popular tourist destination of Walhalla. Construction began in 1904. The line closed in sections from 1944 to 1954. Thomson River (Victoria)
The Thomson River, a perennial river of the West Gippsland catchment, is located in the Gippsland region of the Australian state of Victoria. Location and features The Thomson River rises below Newlands at the north western end of the Baw Baw Plateau of the Great Dividing Range, where it shares a watershed with the Yarra and Tanjil rivers. From its source, the river flows generally north, then east, then south southeast through its impoundment, then southeast, then east, and finally east by south, joined by seventeen tributaries including the Jordan, Aberfeldy, and Macalister rivers, before reaching its confluence with the Latrobe River near Sale. Erica Railway Station
Erica was a railway station on the Walhalla narrow gauge line in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The station was officially opened in 1910, became the terminus of the line on 4 October 1952 with the closure of the section of track to Platina, then closed finally on 25 June 1954. From 1941 onwards, the station also had sidings for a Forest Commission timber mill. Erica was originally named Upper Moondarra, but was renamed prior to 15 June 1908 to Moondarra, then to Harris (after a local member of parliament) prior to the line opening. In 1914 it was renamed Erica after a local mountain. Platina Railway Station
Platina was a railway station on the Walhalla narrow gauge line in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The station was opened in 1910, and consisted of a passenger shed and a number of sidings. The Evans brothers built two lime kilns nearby in 1912, and had their own siding at the station. In 1944, the railway line between Platina and Walhalla was closed. The lime quarries and kilns ceased operating in 1951, causing the closure of the Erica to Platina railway the following year. All that exists at the former site of Platina Station is a small shelter and a grassed picnic area. A road overbridge is located at the down end of the station. The route is now used by the Walhalla Goldfields Rail Trail. The Walhalla Goldfields Railway have plans to extend the tourist railway to Platina and eventually to Erica.
