History The Thomson Football Club was formed in 1953 by a group of local parents. The club would field a team in the local junior competition. Club meetings were held in the local Tate Street Primary School, the club would adopt the school colours of gold and purple for its jumper. Geelong & District Football League
The Geelong & District Football League (GDFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball league in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, being the oldest surviving competition in the region. It is one of three leagues in the Geelong area, the others being the Geelong Football League, Geelong FNL and the Bellarine Football League, Bellarine FNL. There are 12 teams competing in the GDFL, which has also produced over 600 Australian Football League, VFL/AFL players. History The league was formed in 1879 as the Geelong and District Football Association (GDFA). In 1919 it changed name to the GDFL, before changing to the Geelong Junior Football Association in 1922. It reverted to the GDFL name in 1933, then back to the GDFA in 1939, and back to the GDFL in 1945. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth nations. Thomson, Victoria
Thomson is a small residential suburb of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Thomson is triangular in shape and is bounded in the west by Breakwater Road, Carr Street and St Albans Road, in the north by Lomond Terrace, Godfrey and Ensby Streets, and in the east by Ormond and Boundary Roads. The East Geelong campus of The Gordon Institute of TAFE is located here, which also includes their student residence. Thomson was named after the early settler and the first mayor of Geelong Dr. Alexander Thomson. Thomson Post Office opened in 1950 and closed in 1992. Larry Donohue
Larry Donohue (born 22 April 1955) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club from 1973 to 1980, playing 105 games kicking 339 goals. He was recruited from the Thomson Football Club. He won the Coleman Medal in 1976 after kicking 99 goals. Donohue kicked 95 goals in 1978 and headed the Cats goalkicking from 1975 to 1978. Donohue moved to Fitzroy but never played senior football with the Lions retiring because of injuries. Donohue later coached locally in Geelong at Thomson and Newcomb guiding the Dinosaurs to the 1988 Bellarine Football League premiership. His son, Adam, was taken as a father/son selection in the 2007 AFL Draft. He did not play a senior game.
