Thomas Williamson (surgeon)
Dr Thomas Williamson FRSE FRCSE (1815–1885) was a Scottish surgeon at Leith Hospital and Medical Officer of Health for North Edinburgh. Life He was born in Greenock in 1815. He studied Medicine at Edinburgh University graduating MB ChB and receiving his doctorate (MD) in 1835. He disappears from records until 1845 when he appears as a doctor in Leith living at first 51 then 35 Charlotte Street. During this period he became senior surgeon at Leith Hospital and remained in this role for over thirty years. He also oversaw the Leith Hospital for Female Incurables (an asylum opposite the hospital) and served as Leith's first Medical Officer of Health. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) is an award granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and letters, judged to be "eminently distinguished in their subject". This society received a royal charter in 1783, allowing for its expansion. Peter David Handyside
Peter David Handyside FRSE FRCSE (1808–1881) was a Scottish surgeon and anatomist. He was president of the Royal Medical Society in 1828. He won the Harveian Society Medal in 1827 and was its secretary in 1837. He was also president of the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Edinburgh in 1871. Life Handyside was born at 16 South Frederick Street in Edinburgh’s New Town on 26 October 1808, the son of Jane Cuninghame and William Handyside WS (1746–1818), a lawyer. His elder brother Robert Handyside (1798–1858) rose to the top of the Scottish legal world, becoming Lord Handyside. He was apprenticed to the eminent surgeon James Syme to train as a doctor. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He then undertook postgraduate studies first in Paris and then in Heidelberg under the eminent physiologist Friedrich Tiedemann. Leith Links
Leith Links ( gd, Fìghdean Lìte) is the principal open space within Leith, the docks district of Edinburgh, Scotland. This public park is divided by a road into two main areas, a western section and an eastern section, both being largely flat expanses of grass bordered by mature trees. Historically it covered a wider area extending north as far as the shoreline of the Firth of Forth. This area of grass and former sand-dunes was previously used as a golf links. Current uses The west section of the park contains children's play areas, football pitches and, in the north-west corner, three public bowling greens and new tennis and petanque courts. In the east section an informal cricket pitch has existed since 1826. It is used by Leith Franklin Academicals Beige cricket club which, taking its name from Benjamin Franklin, was established in 1852 as the Leith Franklin cricket club. James Pringle (Provost)
James Pringle FRSE FRSGS (1822–1886) was a Scottish rope manufacturer who served as Provost of Leith 1881 until 1886. Life He was born in 1822 the son of William Murray Pringle of the Edinburgh Naval and Military Academy. The family lived at 23 Bread Street. James was educated at the High School in Edinburgh. He was at the school during its relocation from High School Yards to Calton Hill in 1829. In 1840 his father was working from the Adjutant General's Office at 1 Grove Street in Edinburgh. From 1841 he worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Rope Company on the north side of Leith Links. He was then living at 15 Thomsons Place in Leith. By 1855 it had become Edinburgh Ropery and Sailcloth Manufactury and he had become Manager. He was by this time living at a relatively new villa, designed by Thomas Hamilton, facing over Leith Links to his place of work, from Claremont Park. Leith Hospital
Leith Hospital was situated on Mill Lane in Leith, Edinburgh, and was a general hospital with adult medical and surgical wards, paediatric medical and surgical wards, a casualty department and a wide range of out-patient services. It closed in 1987. History Origins The King James Hospital, in the Kirkgate, which was named after King James VI, who awarded a charter to the hospital, was founded in 1614. The hospital was demolished in 1822, although part of the wall can still be seen today, forming the boundary between the Kirkgate and south Leith Kirkyard. In the late 18th century the Human Society, which promotes lifesaving intervention, established a presence in Leith, at first in Burgess Close and Bernard Street and then in Broad Wynd. Leith
Leith (; gd, Lìte) is a port area in the north of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, founded at the mouth of the Water of Leith. In 2021, it was ranked by '' Time Out'' as one of the top five neighbourhoods to live in the world. The earliest surviving historical references are in the royal charter authorising the construction of Holyrood Abbey in 1128 in which it is termed ''Inverlet'' (Inverleith).
