Thomas Valintine
Thomas Harcourt Ambrose Valintine (1 August 1865 – 30 August 1945) was a notable New Zealand doctor and public health administrator, who spent the first three decades of the 20th century dedicated to public health. He was responsible for major tuberculosis treatment initiatives in New Zealand, the introduction of district nursing and a pioneering health education campaign. Early life Valintine was born in Westhampnett, Sussex, England, in 1865, and was educated at Marlborough College, Wiltshire. He graduated with medical and surgical qualifications and a Royal College of Physicians Diploma in Public Health at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. Hester Maclean
Hester Maclean (25 February 1859 – 2 September 1932) was an Australian-born nurse, hospital matron, nursing administrator, editor and writer who spent most of her career in New Zealand. She served in World War I as the founding Matron-in-Chief of the New Zealand Army Nursing Service, and was one of the first nurses to receive the Florence Nightingale Medal. Early life Maclean was born in Sofala, New South Wales, Australia on 25 February 1859. Her parents were Emily (née Strong) and Harold Maclean. She was educated at private schools and was inspired by her father's nurse to become a nurse herself. Maclean trained at Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, completing her certificate in 1893. Career After completing her training, Maclean nursed in a number of hospitals in New South Wales and Victoria, including the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne and Kogarah Hospital in Sydney. Commander Of The Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. Elaine Gurr
Eily Elaine Gurr (8 November 1896 – 12 December 1996) was a New Zealand medical doctor and medical administrator and advocate of the discipline of general practice. Early life and education Gurr was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on 8 November 1896, but grew up in Wellington and Dannevirke. She was educated at Woodford House and Wellington Girls' College. Gurr graduated from the University of Otago with MB ChB degrees in 1923. Career Gurr's first position was as a house surgeon at Timaru Hospital. She then left New Zealand to do post-graduate training in midwifery in Dublin at the Rotunda Hospital and Coombe Hospital. This was followed by further training in ante-natal care at the Royal Free Hospital and Chelsea Hospital in London.
