Thomas Tredgold
Thomas Tredgold (1788–1829) was an English engineer and author, known for his early work on railroad construction. His definition of civil engineering formed the basis of the charter of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Biography He was born at Brandon, County Durham, on 22 August 1788. After some elementary education at the village school, he was apprenticed at 14 to a cabinet-maker in Durham. He remained with him six years, studying also mathematics, architecture, and perspective. In 1808, after his apprenticeship had expired, he went to Scotland, where he worked for five years as a joiner and journeyman carpenter. Later Tredgold went to London, where he entered the office of his uncle William Atkinson the architect, with whom he lived for six years, and whom he served for longer. He read on architecture and engineering; and taught himself French. In 1823, the demands of his writing led Tredgold to resign his position in Atkinson's office. He died on 28 January 1829, ...

Peter Nicholson (architect)
Peter Nicholson (20 July 1765  – 18 June 1844) was a Scottish architect, mathematician and engineer. Largely self-taught, he was apprenticed to a cabinet-maker but soon abandoned his trade in favour of teaching and writing. He practised as an architect but is best remembered for his theoretical work on the skew arch (he never actually constructed one himself), his invention of draughtsman's instruments, including a centrolinead and a cyclograph, and his prolific writing on numerous practical subjects. George Rennie (engineer)
George Rennie (3 December 1791 – 30 March 1866) was an engineer born in London, England. He was the son of the Scottish engineer John Rennie the Elder and the brother of Sir John Rennie. Early life Born in the parish of Christchurch, Blackfriars Road, Southwark, London, he was educated by Dr. Greenlaw at Isleworth, and was subsequently sent to St. Paul's School and to the University of Edinburgh. Robertson Buchanan
Robertson Buchanan (1770–1816) was a Scottish civil engineer from Glasgow. Life He was the son of the Glasgow merchant George Buchanan, and his first wife Jane Gorvie. In the early 1790s he was working at Rothesay, Argyll and Bute, Rothesay for David Dale. His interests spread out from mill machinery, to pumps and heating. He also went into bridge construction. In 1808 Buchanan was working for Henry Houldsworth (cotton mill owner), Henry Houldsworth at Cranstonhill, building a large waterworks. The following year he set up in business at Port Dundas, and in 1810 he became a burgess of Glasgow. In 1811 he was working on an early railway proposal in Scotland, to run from Dumfries to Sanquhar. Buchanan died on 22 July 1816, at the house of Alexander Innes (a father to one of Buchanan's stepmothers) of Creech St Michael, near Taunton, in his forty-sixth year. John Smeaton
John Smeaton (8 June 1724 – 28 October 1792) was a British civil engineer responsible for the design of bridges, canals, harbours and lighthouses. He was also a capable mechanical engineer and an eminent physicist. Edward Woods (engineer)
Edward Woods FRSA (28 April 1814 – 14 June 1903) was a British civil engineer. Early life and career Woods was born in London on 28 April 1814, the son of Samuel Woods, a merchant. His younger brother, Joseph Woods was also an engineer and in 1844 became a founding partner of Dewrance & Co. Ltd. After education at private schools, and some training at Bristol, he became in 1834 an assistant to John Dixon, recently appointed chief engineer of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Woods was placed in charge of the section, 15 miles in length, between Liverpool and Newton-le-Willows, including Wapping Tunnel between the Cavendish cutting and Park Lane goods stations; and in 1836 he succeeded Dixon as chief engineer, taking also charge of the mechanical department. John Seaward
John Seaward (January 1786 - 26 March 1858) was a British civil engineer and mechanical engineer. His brother was Samuel Seaward, FRS (see below). Early life Seaward was born the son of a builder in Lambeth, London, in January 1786, and initially worked with his father as a surveying, surveyor and architect. Career Early career After working for his father, John was first employed by Grillier & Company, the contractors for the erection of Vauxhall Bridge#History, Regent's Bridge across the River Thames, to supervise the work. James Hann
James Hann (1799–1856) was an English mathematician, teacher and textbook writer. Life Hann was born at Washington, County Durham, where his father was a colliery smith. After working as a fireman at a pumping-station at Hebburn, he was for several years on one of the steamers used on the Tyne River for towing vessels. He studied mathematics, in particular the works of William Emerson the fluxionist. Hann then became a teacher, and kept a school at Friar's Goose, near Newcastle. An acquaintanceship with Wesley S. B. Woolhouse the mathematician led to Hann's obtaining a situation as calculator in the Nautical Almanac Office.
