Chancellor Of The Duchy Of Lancaster
The chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster is a ministerial office in the Government of the United Kingdom. The position is the second highest ranking minister in the Cabinet Office, immediately after the Prime Minister, and senior to the Minister for the Cabinet Office. The role includes as part of its duties the administration of the estates and rents of the Duchy of Lancaster. Formally, the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster is appointed by the Sovereign on the advice of the prime minister, and is answerable to Parliament for the governance of the Duchy. In modern times, however, the involvement of the chancellor in the running of the day-to-day affairs of the Duchy is slight, and the office is held by a senior politician whose main role is usually quite different. In practical terms, it is a sinecure, allowing the prime minister to appoint an additional minister without portfolio to the Cabinet of the United Kingdom. Sir Thomas Stanley, 4th Baronet
Sir Thomas Stanley, 4th Baronet (27 September 1670 – 7 May 1714) was a British Member of Parliament. Stanley was the son of Sir Edward Stanley, 3rd Baronet, and Elizabeth Bosvile, and succeeded his father in the baronetcy at the age of one. This branch of the Stanley family, known as the "Stanleys of Bickerstaffe", were descended from Sir James Stanley, younger brother of Thomas Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby. Stanley later represented Preston in the House of Commons from 1695 to 1698. He married Elizabeth Patten in 1688, and died in May 1714, aged 43. Sir Thomas Stanley (1625 – 12 April 1678) was an English author and translator. Life He was born in Cumberlow, Hertfordshire, the son of Sir Thomas Stanley of Cumberlow and his wife, Mary Hammond. Mary was the cousin of Richard Lovelace, and Stanley was educated in company with the son of Edward Fairfax, the translator of Tasso. He proceeded to Cambridge in 1637, in his thirteenth year, as a gentleman commoner of Pembroke Hall. In 1641 he took his M.A. degree, but seems by that time to have proceeded to Oxford. He subsequently embarked on a legal career, entering the Middle Temple in 1664 to study law. He was wealthy, married early, and travelled much in Europe. He was the friend and companion, and at need the helper, of many poets, and was himself both a writer and a translator of verse. Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby, KG (1435 – 29 July 1504) was an English nobleman. He was the stepfather of King Henry VII of England. He was the eldest son of Thomas Stanley, 1st Baron Stanley and Joan Goushill. A landed magnate of immense wealth and power, particularly across the northwest of England where his authority went almost unchallenged, Stanley managed to remain in favour with successive kings throughout the Wars of the Roses, including King Richard III of England, who took Stanley's son as a hostage. Thomas Stanley took the side of Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Sir Thomas Stanley (1626 – 27 August 1674) was an English politician who sat in the Parliament of Ireland MP for County Tipperary and Waterford and Louth in the Restoration Parliament, 1661–62. He joined the Privy Council of Ireland in March 1674. He acquired the manor of Grangegorman, Dublin. Stanley was knighted by Henry Cromwell on 24 January 1659 at Dublin Castle. Along with another parliamentarian Sir Anthony Morgan, Sir Thomas was implicated in the notorious Blood plot of 1663, in which Thomas Blood had planned to kidnap the Duke of Ormond, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, from Dublin Castle. Sir Thomas and Sir Anthony wrote "obsequious letters" to Ormond proclaiming their innocence and devotion to him. Stanely married Jane Borrowes.
