Thomas Petre, 6th Baron Petre
Thomas Petre, 6th Baron Petre (1633–1706) was an English Catholic peer, the third son of Robert Petre, 3rd Baron Petre and Mary Brown. Inheriting the title from his elder brother, Petre held the title for 21 years. Soon after Petre inherited his title, James II came to the throne. As both men were Catholics in a Protestant country, Petre soon found favour with the new King. His second cousin, Father Edward Petre, S.J., became advisor and confidant to James II. Edward was universally hated and reviled by the populace. In 1688, Thomas was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Essex and ''custos rotulorum'' for Essex. After James's flight in the Glorious Revolution, Petre was forced to resign when the militia refused to serve a Catholic. After the Revolution, much of the vast revenues from the Petre estates were sent abroad to help maintain those institutions in continental Europe that provided education for Catholic Englishmen. Baron Petre (), of Writtle, in the County of Essex, is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1603 for Sir John Petre. His family has since been associated with the county of Essex. He represented Essex in parliament and served as Lord Lieutenant of Essex. Lord Petre was the son of Sir William Petre, Secretary of State to Henry VIII, Mary I, Edward VI and Elizabeth I. Sir William acquired Ingatestone Hall and the surrounding manor from Henry for the full market value after it had been surrendered to the King by Barking Abbey during the Suppression of the Monasteries. William Maynard, 2nd Baron Maynard (c. 1623 – 3 February 1688/89) was an English aristocrat, the son of William Maynard, 1st Baron Maynard and Anne Everard. He married Dorothy Banastre. He later married Lady Margaret Murray, daughter of William Murray, 1st Earl of Dysart and Catherine Bruce. Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle (14 August 1653 – 6 October 1688) was an English soldier and politician who sat in the House of Commons of England, House of Commons from 1667 to 1670 when he inherited the Dukedom and sat in the House of Lords. Origins Monck was the son and heir of George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608–1670) by his wife Anne Clarges (d.1700), a daughter of John Clarges, "Farrier in the Savoy Palace, Savoy", of Drury Lane, Westminster. Robert Petre, 3rd Baron Petre
Robert Petre, 3rd Baron Petre (22 January 1599 – 28 October 1638), was educated at Oxford and acceded to the title in 1637 but enjoyed his honours but a short time, and followed his father to the grave in little more than a year. In 1620, he married Mary (1603–1685), daughter of Anthony Maria Browne, 2nd Viscount Montague. She was a charitable and gallant Royalist and Catholic, once defying a troop of over a hundred Cromwellian / Roundhead / parliamentary soldiers alone, who wished to search Ingatestone Hall. She was a woman destined to have a long and troubled widowhood. Many are the notices in the State Papers about the Petre property in her days until she died in 1685, two years after her son. When Lord Petre died in 1638 an inventory showed that he had no debts, £7,500 cash in hand (approximately £657,000 today) and £4,000 in realizable loans (approximately £350,000 today).
