Thomas Metcalfe (courtier)
Thomas Metcalfe was the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster between 7 July 1483 - 13 September 1486. He was a Privy Councillor in 1460. He was a trusted member of King Richard III of England, Richard III's council, and, by reason of his position, judge of the Duchy court that sat at Westminster. Thomas Metcalfe built Nappa Hall in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire in the 1470s. He married Elizabeth Hartlington of Hartlington, in Craven District, Craven, Yorkshire, heiress of an ancient family of Clifford tenants who had been bailiffs of Kettlewelldale. Thomas Metcalfe (Kentucky Politician)
Thomas Metcalfe (March 20, 1780 – August 18, 1855), also known as Thomas Metcalf or as "Stonehammer", was a U.S. Representative, Senator, and the tenth Governor of Kentucky. He was the first gubernatorial candidate in the state's history to be chosen by a nominating convention rather than a caucus. He was also the first governor of Kentucky who was not a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. At age 16, Metcalfe was apprenticed to his older brother and became a stonemason. He helped construct the Green County courthouse, known as the oldest courthouse in Kentucky. Later, political opponents would mock his trade, giving him the nickname "Old Stone Hammer." His political career began with four terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives. His service was interrupted by the War of 1812, in which he commanded a company in the defense of Fort Meigs. Sir Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe, 1st Baronet (8 January 1745 – 17 November 1813) was a British soldier and politician. Biography Metcalfe was the son of Rev'd Thomas Metcalfe, a chaplain in the British Army, and his wife, Margaret Williams. Metcalfe was born at Throstle Nest, Gisborough, Cleveland, England. He served as an officer in the army of the East India Company having first traveled to India in 1767, eventually becoming a major in the Bengal Army. He was a Director of the East India Company intermittently between 1789 and 1812, and gained a considerable personal fortune. He purchased the manor of Chilton and the estate of Fernhill at Winkfield in Berkshire, He was elected Member of Parliament for Abingdon in 1796 as a Tory. Thomas John Metcalf (born July 16, 1940) is an American former professional baseball pitcher who appeared in eight games, all in relief, in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees. Born in Amherst, Wisconsin, Metcalf graduated from Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids and attended Northwestern University. He threw and batted right-handed, and stood tall during his active career. He signed with the Yankees in 1961 and was in his third year in their farm system when he was called to the majors in August 1963. He was treated roughly by the Baltimore Orioles in his August 4 debut, allowing a home run to John Orsino, five hits and three earned runs in two innings pitched, but, over his last seven appearances and 11 innings pitched in the majors, he permitted only one run. Thomas Clark Metcalf (1878 – May 1938) was an English professional footballer who played as a half-back for Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1900s. Football career Metcalf was born in Burton upon Trent and started his football career with Burton United, then playing in the Football League Second Division, in January 1903. He failed to break into the first team, and in March 1904 he moved to the south coast to join Southern League champions, Southampton. Most of his time with the "Saints" was spent in the reserves who he helped win the Hampshire Senior Cup in 1905. His first-team debut came on 23 September 1905 when he took the place of Samuel Meston at left-half, with Meston moving to the right in the absence of Bert Lee, for the Southern League match at Northampton Town, won 2–1. Thomas Humphrey Metcalfe (also spelled Metcalf) ( – March 16, 1790) was an American maritime fur trader who worked with his father, Simon Metcalfe. After being separated from his father in a storm, Thomas sailed a small schooner with a crew of four from the vicinity of China to Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island where he was arrested by the Spanish. After being released he sailed to Hawaii, hoping to find his father. Instead, he was attacked and killed by Native Hawaiians in revenge for misdeeds committed by his father just days before. Early family life Little is known about Thomas Metcalfe's life apart from the events of about 1787–1790. Thomas's father, Simon was born in London, England, in the mid-18th century.
