Thomas McIlwraith (ornithologist)
Thomas McIlwraith (December 26, 1824 – January 31, 1903) was a Canadian ornithologist and businessman. The outdoor natural history organization McIlwraith Field Naturalists of London, Ontario was named in his honour in 1902. He was one of the founding members of the American Ornithologists' Union. Biography McIlwraith was born in Newton upon Ayr, Scotland to Thomas McIlwraith, a weaver, and Jean Adair Forsyth. He was the seventh of ten children. In 1846 he moved to Edinburgh where he studied for three years and he returned to his hometown and briefly apprenticed as a cabinet maker before taking up work in the management of the Newton Gas Works. In October 1853 he married Mary, daughter of Baillie Hugh Park and moved to Hamilton, Canada the next month. He worked in the Hamilton Gas Light Company until 1871 after which he owned the commercial wharf and managed the coal transport business. Ornithology is a branch of zoology that concerns the "methodological study and consequent knowledge of birds with all that relates to them." London (pronounced ) is a city in southwestern Ontario, Canada, along the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor. The city had a population of 422,324 according to the 2021 Canadian census. American Ornithological Society
The American Ornithological Society (AOS) is an ornithological organization based in the United States. The society was formed in October 2016 by the merger of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) and the Cooper Ornithological Society. Its members are primarily professional ornithologists, although membership is open to anyone with an interest in birds. The society publishes the two scholarly journals, ''The Auk'' and '' The Condor'' as well as the ''AOS Checklist of North American Birds''. In 2013, the American Ornithologists' Union announced a close partnership with the Cooper Ornithological Society, including joint meetings, a centralized publishing office, and a refocusing of their respective journals to increase efficiency of research. Hamilton is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario. Hamilton has a population of 569,353, and its census metropolitan area, which includes Burlington and Grimsby, has a population of 785,184. Ernest Thompson Seton
Ernest Thompson Seton (born Ernest Evan Thompson August 14, 1860 – October 23, 1946) was an English-born Canadian-American author, wildlife artist, founder of the Woodcraft Indians in 1902 (renamed Woodcraft League of America), and one of the founding pioneers of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in 1910. Seton also influenced Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of one of the first Scouting organizations. His writings were published in the United Kingdom, Canada, the US, and the USSR; his notable books related to Scouting include ''The Birch Bark Roll'' and the '' Boy Scout Handbook''. William Edwin Saunders
William Edwin Saunders (16 August 1861 - 28 June 1943) was a Canadian naturalist. He contributed to the studies of birds and mammals in Canada. He served as the founding president of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists. He was a brother of the plant breeder Charles E. Saunders. Saunders was born in London, Ontario to William Saunders senior (1836-1914), a founding director of the Dominion Experimental Farm in Ottawa, and Sarah Agnes Robinson, a botanist whose rare collection of plant specimens became a crucial component of the National Herbarium of Canada. Saunders went to local schools. He then studied chemistry at Trinity College School and graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1883. Montague Chamberlain
Montague Chamberlain (April 5, 1844 – February 10, 1924) was a Canadian-American businessman, naturalist, and ethnographer. Biography Chamberlain was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. He spent the first few decades of his life as a bookkeeper and later manager of a grocery company in St. John. In his mid-twenties, he also became a dedicated amateur ornithologist. In 1883 he co-founded the American Ornithologists' Union, which today stakes its claim as "the oldest and largest organization in the New World devoted to the scientific study of birds." In 1888 Chamberlain became a resident member and editor for the Nuttall Ornithological Club, and a founding member of the American Ornithologists' Union. After quitting the grocery business, he became the assistant secretary of the Harvard Corporation in 1889 and the secretary of the Lawrence Scientific School in 1893. The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is a museum of art, world culture and natural history in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is one of the largest museums in North America and the largest in Canada.
