Thomas McElveen
Thomas McElveen (born February 17, 1978) is a South Carolina state senator, representing the 35th district. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Personal life and education McElveen earned a bachelor's degree from Davidson College in 2000 and a JD from the University of South Carolina in 2003. McElveen's father, Joe McElveen, is the mayor of Sumter, South Carolina. Career McElveen served as both a prosecutor and public defender for Sumter County. Sumter County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 105,556. In a 2018 census estimate, the population was 106,512. Its county seat is Sumter. Joseph T. McElveen, Jr. (born October 19, 1946) is an American Politician and the former Congressman from South Carolina. He was the mayor of Sumter, South Carolina who served for 20 years—from November 2000 to November 2020. Early life and education McElvee was born in Sumter in 1946. He graduated from The Citadel (The Military College of South Carolina) in 1968. He earned a Juris Doctor degree at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1971. McElvee served in the US Air Force until 1977, and received an honorable discharge. Career McElveen served on the Sumter City council from 1984 to 1986 until he was elected in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1986 to 1996. The South Carolina Senate is the upper house of the South Carolina General Assembly, the lower house being the South Carolina House of Representatives. It consists of 46 senators elected from single member districts for four-year terms at the same time as United States presidential elections.
