General Thomas Casey Lyons (9 July 1829 – 13 September 1897) was a British Army officer who became General Officer Commanding Western District. Early life Born in County Limerick, Lyons was the fourth son of Bridgette Kennedy and James Denis Lyons of Croome House, grandson of Thomas Casey, MP for Kilmallock. Croom, County Limerick
Croom () is a village in County Limerick, Ireland. It is located just off the N20 (which has bypassed the town since 2001) on the River Maigue. It is 8 km southeast of Adare on the N20. History Cromadh (now Croom) was a village in the territory of the Uí Fidgenti, and one of the seats of the O’Donovans of the Ui Fidgheinte, which flourished from the late 4th century to the mid 12th century. A hermitage, Dísert Óengusa, was founded nearby by Óengus of Tallaght around the year AD 780. The townland is located on the River Maigue, which although now having a tidal flow only to Adare, in ancient years the river had a tidal flow past Croom, making it a transit route for the Viking ships traversing inland from the Shannon during the 9th and 10th centuries. James Sayer (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant-General Sir James Robert Steadman Sayer (13 January 1826 – 12 June 1908) was a British Army officer who became General Officer Commanding Western District. Sayer was born at Sibton Park, the eldest son of Robert Sayer and Frances Errington. Military career Sayer was commissioned as a cornet in the King's Dragoon Guards on 23 May 1845. He served as a junior officer in the Crimean War and subsequently served in the British Indian Army. He became General Officer Commanding Western District in England in April 1883. He was appointed Colonel of the 8th Hussars for a brief time in 1886. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". George Digby Barker
General Sir George Digby Barker (Chinese Translated Name: 白加; 9 October 1833 – 15 April 1914) was a British soldier and colonial administrator. Military career Barker was commissioned into the 78th Regiment of Foot in 1853. He served in Anglo-Persian War of 1856 and in the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and was present at Siege of Lucknow. He went on to become adjutant of his regiment in 1859. He was then made assistant adjutant and quartermaster-general in 1884. Then in 1874 he was made a Professor at the Staff College and in 1877 Assistant Director of Military Education at Headquarters. He became Commander of British Troops in China and Hong Kong in 1890. Under his command, the size of the garrison increased by 50 per cent in response to Governor Des Voeux's concerns about the defence of the colony. Lieutenant-General Sir Edward Newdigate Newdegate, (15 June 1825 – 1 August 1902) was a British Army officer. Until 1887 he was Edward Newdigate. Background and early life Newdegate was born at Astley Castle, Warwickshire, on 15 June 1825, the fourth son of Francis Newdigate, of Kirk Hallam, Derbyshire, by Lady Barbara Maria Legge (1791–1840), daughter of the 3rd Earl of Dartmouth. Lieutenant-general Sir Henry Richard Legge Newdigate (1832–1908) was a younger brother. He was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Military career Newdegate was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade in 1842. Howard Craufurd Elphinstone
Major General Sir Howard Craufurd Elphinstone, (12 December 1829 – 8 March 1890) was a British Army officer and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Early career and the Crimean War Born in Livonia, Elphinstone joined the Corps of Royal Engineers as a gentleman cadet at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in December 1847. With the outbreak of the Crimean War, Elphinstone was posted to the Crimea and it was during the Siege of Sebastopol that he won the Victoria Cross. Siege Of Lucknow
The siege of Lucknow was the prolonged defence of the British Residency within the city of Lucknow from rebel sepoys (Indian soldiers in the British East India Company's Army) during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. After two successive relief attempts had reached the city, the defenders and civilians were evacuated from the Residency, which was then abandoned. Background to the siege The state of Oudh/Awadh had been annexed by the British East India Company and the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was exiled to Calcutta the year before the rebellion broke out. This high-handed action by the East India Company was greatly resented within the state and elsewhere in India. The first British Commissioner (in effect the governor) appointed to the newly acquired territory was Coverley Jackson.
