James Sayer (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant-General Sir James Robert Steadman Sayer (13 January 1826 – 12 June 1908) was a British Army officer who became General Officer Commanding Western District. Sayer was born at Sibton Park, the eldest son of Robert Sayer and Frances Errington. Military career Sayer was commissioned as a cornet in the King's Dragoon Guards on 23 May 1845. He served as a junior officer in the Crimean War and subsequently served in the British Indian Army. He became General Officer Commanding Western District in England in April 1883. He was appointed Colonel of the 8th Hussars for a brief time in 1886. Burke's Peerage Limited is a British genealogical publisher founded in 1826, when the Irish genealogist John Burke began releasing books devoted to the ancestry and heraldry of the peerage, baronetage, knightage and landed gentry of Great Britain and Ireland. Charles Craufurd Fraser
Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Craufurd Fraser (31 August 1829 – 7 June 1895) was a British recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was also a Conservative politician. Early life Fraser was the third son of Sir James Fraser and his wife Charlotte Anne Craufurd. He joined the 7th Hussars (The Queen's Own), British Army as a cornet in 1847, became lieutenant in 1850 and captain in 1854. On 5 January 1858 he became orderly officer for Brigadier Campbell at Munseata near Allahabad and was promoted to major on 20 July 1858. Victoria Cross Fraser was 29 years old, and a major in the 7th Hussars (The Queen's Own) during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place on 31 December 1858 at the River Raptee, India for which he was awarded the VC: He was also awarded the Royal Humane Society's Medal 1st Class. William Charles Forrest
General William Charles Forrest (22 March 1819 – 1 April 1902) was a senior officer in the British Army. Forrest was born in London, the second son of Lieutenant-Colonel William Forrest of the Bengal Army, and his wife, Georgiana Christina Carmichael-Smyth, daughter of James Carmichael Smyth and sister of Sir James Carmichael-Smyth, 1st Baronet. He joined the Army as a cornet in 1836, and was promoted lieutenant in 1839, captain in 1841, major in 48, brevet lieutenant-colonel in 1854, lieutenant-colonel in 1859, colonel in 1860, major-general in 1868, lieutenant-general in 1877 and full general on 1 July 1881. He fought in the Crimean War and took part in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava. He was appointed CB in the 1875 Birthday Honours. He was given the colonelcy of the 8th Hussars from 1880 to 1886 and of the 11th Hussars from 8 February 1886 until his death in 1902. William Vesey Brownlow
Major-General William Vesey Brownlow (12 June 1841 – 15 March 1928) was a British Army officer. Military career Brownlow was commissioned as an ensign the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot in April 1859. He served in the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879 and the First Boer War in 1880. During the First Boer War he was wounded and had his horse shot out from under him. He was rescued by Private John Doogan who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his action. Brownlow became assistant commandant and superintendent at the Riding Establishment Cavalry Depot in May 1882 and commanded the 22nd Regimental District (the Cheshire Regiment) from 1889 to 1894. He went on to serve as colonel of the 1st King's Dragoon Guards from 1908 to 1926. He lived at Boughton Hall in Great Boughton, Cheshire. He was also High Sheriff of Monaghan from 1907 to 1908. General Henry Aitchison Hankey (6 October 1805 – 24 June 1886) was a senior British Army officer. Military career Hankey was commissioned as an cornet in the 1st King's Dragoon Guards June 1823. Thomas Pakenham (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant-General Thomas Henry Pakenham (26 June 1826 – 20 February 1913) was an Irish Conservative politician and British Army officer. Military career A member of the Pakenham family headed by the Earl of Longford, he was the son of the Honourable Sir Hercules Pakenham and the Honourable Emily Stapleton, daughter of Thomas Stapleton, 16th Baron le Despencer. He fought in the Crimean War in 1854 and in the Fenian raids in 1866. He was first elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Antrim in 1854, succeeding his brother Edward Pakenham, who was killed at the Battle of Inkerman. He remained MP until 1865. He became Commander of 1st Infantry Brigade in February 1878 and General Officer Commanding Western District in 1880. Pakenham married Elizabeth Staples Clarke, daughter of William Clarke, of New York City, in 1862. They had two sons, Hercules Pakenham and Major Harry Francis Pakenham.
