Thomas Long (Ontario Politician)
Thomas Long (August 7, 1836 – October 9, 1920) was an Ontario merchant and political figure. He represented Simcoe West in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative from 1875 to 1883. He was born in County Limerick, Ireland in 1836, began his education there and went to Simcoe County in Canada West in 1850, where he apprenticed with a merchant. He finished his schooling in Buffalo, New York. Long moved to Collingwood in 1857, where he managed a store for merchants before going into business for himself the following year. He married Ann Patton in 1861. Thomas Long Of Draycot
Sir Thomas Long of Draycot (c. 1451–1508) was an English landowner and knight. He is known to have served as one of the Members of Parliament for the borough of Westbury in 1491 and was twice High Sheriff of Wiltshire. Life Born in Wiltshire, the son of John Long and his wife Margaret Wayte, he succeeded to the Draycot estates on the death of his father on 20 September 1478, and inherited South Wraxall from his uncle Henry Long in 1490. Long was among the 'great compaignye of noble men' who went with Edward, Duke of Buckingham, in 1496 to meet the King at Taunton, then in pursuit of Perkin Warbeck. In 1501 he received a knighthood at the marriage of Henry VII's eldest son, Arthur, Prince of Wales, and he was also at the reception of Catherine of Aragon at Shaftesbury in October of that year. Thomas Long (1539 – 30 June 1593), also spelt Longe, was the first Englishman to be punished for being elected to the House of Commons of England The House of Commons of England was the lower house of the Parliament of England (which incorporated Wales) from its development in the 14th century to the union of England and Scotland in 1707, when it was replaced by the House of Commons of ... by bribery. After being returned as one of the two Members of the Parliament of England for Westbury in 1571, Long was found to be "a simple man, and of small capacity to serve in parliament".
