Thomas Letson Pardo
Thomas Letson Pardo (November 21, 1840 – June 11, 1925) was an Ontario farmer, manufacturer and political figure. He represented Kent West in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1894 to 1902 as a Liberal-Patrons of Industry and then Liberal member. He was born at Cedar Springs, Upper Canada, the son of Thomas Pardo. Pardo was in British Columbia from 1862 to 1865, possibly in search of gold. After his return, in 1866, he married Ellen Jane Price. He operated a sawmill in partnership with his brothers, later becoming sole owner, and also manufactured barrel staves and operated gristmills at Blenheim. Pardo served on the council for Harwich Township, also serving as reeve. The Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW) was a fraternal organization in the United States and Canada, providing mutual social and financial support after the American Civil War. It was the first of the "fraternal benefit societies", organizations that would offer insurance as well as sickness, accident, death and burial policies. History The order began when John Jordan Upchurch, a mechanic on the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad living in Meadville, Pennsylvania, became dissatisfied with a group he had joined, the League of Friendship, Mechanical Order of the Sun. The latter society had established a lodge, called a subordinate League, in Meadville on April 20, 1868, and its membership was composed almost entirely of mechanics, engineers, firemen and day labors working on the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad and in the local shops. Kent County, area 2,458 km2 (949 sq mi) is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was created in 1792 and named by John Graves Simcoe in honour of the English County. Blenheim ( 2021 population 4,487) is a community located in south-central Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada. History By 1783, there were French settlers in Detroit and Windsor. There were also settlers in the Niagara and Kingston region, but no real settlers to speak of in the Kent County region. In 1790, Alexander McKee negotiated Treaty #2 (McKee's Purchase) of 1790 with Pottowatomie, Wendat, Ojibwe, and Odtawa leaders in Detroit to acquire what is now Southwestern Ontario. With this area now being British controlled, settlers began moving rapidly into this new land area, and eventually, the County of Kent, and Blenheim.
