Thomas Legh (lawyer)
Sir Thomas Leigh ''or'' Legh (?1511–1545) was an English jurist and diplomat, who played a key role as agent of Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell in the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Life The younger son of John Leigh, lord of the manor of Frizington, Cumberland, he was a cousin of Bishop Rowland Leigh (''or'' Lee), scions of the ancient Leigh family of West Hall, High Legh, Cheshire. Leigh was educated at Eton College before entering King's College, Cambridge proceeding LLB in 1527, and LLD in 1531. He was called to the Bar 7 October 1531. In December 1532 he was appointed ambassador to the King of Denmark; Imperial Ambassador Eustace Chapuys was unimpressed with Dr Leigh at this time. He was recalled from Denmark in March 1533, then being employed in 1533 by his cousin the bishop. Thomas Leigh (Lord Mayor)
Sir Thomas Leigh (c. 1504 – 15 November 1571) was an English merchant and Lord Mayor of London in 1558-59. He served as a City Alderman from 1552 until 1571. Life Leigh was born about 1504 at Wellington, Shropshire to Roger Leigh (died 1506) and Anne ''née'' Trafford. He was the 2nd great-grandson of Sir Piers Leigh, who was wounded at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, whose family was a cadet branch of the ancient Leighs, of West Hall, High Legh, Cheshire. Leigh was raised by Sir Rowland Hill, a City mercer and wool merchant, and later joined Sir Rowland's business, and circa 1535, he married his niece and heir, Alice Barker, daughter of John Barker and Elizabeth ''née'' Hill. The following year he was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Shropshire. Leigh, who served three times as Master of the Mercers' Company, also served as Sheriff of London (1555–56) and in 1558 became Lord Mayor of London. Thomas Leigh, 1st Baron Leigh
Thomas Leigh, 1st Baron Leigh (1595 – 22 February 1672) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1628 to 1629. He supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War and was created a baron in 1643. Leigh was the son of Sir John Leigh and his first wife Ursula Hoddesdon, daughter of Sir Christopher Hoddesdon, of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. He matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, under entry dated 4 November 1608, aged 13. He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his grandfather, Sir Thomas Leigh, 1st Baronet, of Stoneleigh, Warwickshire on 1 February 1626. In 1628, he was elected member of parliament for Warwickshire and sat until 1629 when King Charles decided to rule without parliament for eleven years. He was Sheriff of Warwickshire from 1636 to 1637. During the Civil War, Leigh showed intrepid loyalty to the king whom he entertained at Stoneleigh when the gates of Coventry were shut against him. Thomas Pemberton Leigh, 1st Baron Kingsdown
Thomas Pemberton Leigh, 1st Baron Kingsdown PC, KC (11 February 17937 October 1867), was a British barrister, judge and politician. Originally a successful equity lawyer, he then entered politics and sat as an MP from 1831 to 1832 and from 1835 to 1843. From 1841 to 1843 he was attorney-general for the Duchy of Cornwall. However, he is best remembered for his role on the judicial committee of the Privy Council, of which he was a member for nearly twenty years. Having turned down the post of Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain in 1858, he was the same year elevated to the peerage as Baron Kingsdown. He died unmarried in October 1867, aged 74.
