Thomas Hungerford (Speaker)
Sir Thomas de Hungerford (died 3 December 1397) of Farleigh Castle in Somerset, was the first person to be recorded in the rolls of the Parliament of England as holding the office of Speaker of the House of Commons of England,Lee Vol 28, pp. 257,258. although that office had existed before his tenure. Origins Hungerford was the son of Walter de Hungerford of Heytesbury, Wiltshire, thrice a Member of Parliament for Wiltshire, in 1331/2, 1333/4 and 1336. His mother was Elizabeth FitzJohn, daughter and heiress of Sir Adam FitzJohn of Cherhill in Wiltshire. The Hungerford family had been seated in Wiltshire since at least the twelfth century. Thomas Hungerford Of Rowden
Sir Thomas Hungerford of Rowden (died 17 January 1469) was an English nobleman. He supported the Lancastrian cause in the War of the Roses and was executed for supporting a conspiracy to restore Henry VI.Lee, Volume 28, p. 257 Origins and early life He was the eldest son of Robert Hungerford, 3rd Baron Hungerford and Eleanor de Moleyns. He lived chiefly at Rowden, near Chippenham, Wiltshire. Thomas was pardoned by Edward IV for participating in the rebellion of his father in November 1462 and was knighted not long afterward. He was allowed to inherit some of his attained father's lands after his execution following the Battle of Hexham on 17 May 1464. Execution After giving some support to Edward IV and the Yorkists, Thomas Hungerford was arrested with Henry Courtenay (brother of Thomas Courtenay, 6th/14th Earl of Devon) in Wiltshire before 11 November 1468. Heytesbury was a parliamentary borough in Wiltshire which elected two Members of Parliament. From 1449 until 1707 it was represented in the House of Commons of England, and then in the British House of Commons until 1832, when the borough was abolished by the Reform Act 1832. History The borough consisted of a small part of the small market town or large village of Heytesbury, in the south-west of Wiltshire. In 1831, when the population of the whole parish was 1,394, the borough had a population of only 81. Already a small settlement, much of Heytesbury burned to the ground in 1765, but this did not affect its right to return members to parliament. The houses lost were subsequently rebuilt. Thomas Hungerford (Australian Politician)
Thomas Hungerford (6 September 1823 – 4 May 1904) was a pioneer pastoralist and politician in Australia. He was a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Early life Hungerford was born near Cork to Captain Emanuel Hungerford and Catherine Loan(e). The family migrated to New South Wales in 1828, and his father settled on the Hunter River. Hungerford became a pastoralist, owning property near Walgett and inheriting his father's Hunter property in 1852. On 19 June 1852 he married Emma Hollingsworth Wood, with whom he had nine children; a second marriage to Catherine Mary Mallon produced six children. Politics He first stood as a candidate for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Upper Hunter at the election for The Upper Hunter, but was unsuccessful, finishing second behind Francis White with a margin of 342 votes (26.6%).
