Thomas Herbert (seaman)
Thomas Herbert (15 May 1597 – 1642?) was a Welsh seaman and author. Biography Herbert was the sixth and posthumous son of Richard Herbert, Lord of Cherbury and his mother Magdalen, daughter of Sir Richard Newport, and brother of Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury and poet George Herbert. He was born at Montgomery Castle on 15 May 1597. He served as page to Sir Edward Cecil in Germany, and distinguished himself by his gallantry at the siege of Juliers in 1610, when aged 13. In 1616 he took service under Captain Benjamin Joseph, commander of ''Globe'', East Indiaman. When Joseph was killed in an engagement with a Portuguese carrack, Herbert assumed the command, and eventually beat off and disabled the enemy. He pursued his voyage to Surat, arriving there in March 1617. Thence he went up the country to Mandow ( Mandu), where the great mogul kept his court. Sir Thomas Herbert, 1st Baronet
Sir Thomas Herbert, 1st Baronet (1606–1682), was an English traveller, historian and a gentleman of the bedchamber of King Charles I while Charles was in the custody of Parliament (from 1647 until the king's execution in January 1649). Biography Herbert was born to a Yorkshire family. His birthplace, a timber-framed structure, still stands in York and is known as the Herbert House. Several of Herbert's ancestors were aldermen and merchants in that area – such as his grandfather and benefactor, Alderman Herbert (d. 1614) – and they traced a connection with the Earls of Pembroke. After attending Tonbridge School, he is said to have studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Jesus College, Oxford (1621), but afterwards removed to Cambridge, through the influence of his uncle Dr Ambrose Akroyd. Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke and 5th Earl of Montgomery, (c. 165622 January 1733), styled The Honourable Thomas Herbert until 1683, was an English and later British statesman during the reigns of William III and Anne. Background Herbert was the third son of Philip Herbert, 5th Earl of Pembroke and his wife Catharine Villiers, daughter of Sir William Villiers, 1st Baronet who was the half-brother of the 1st Duke of Buckingham, George Villiers. Through his grandmother, Susan de Vere, he was a great-grandson of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, the Oxfordians' William Shakespeare. He was educated at Tonbridge School, Kent. Both of his brothers (the 6th Earl and the 7th Earl) having died without a male heir, he succeeded to the earldoms in 1683. Thomas Herbert (Newport MP)
Thomas Herbert (c.1695–1739) was a British army officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1726 to 1739. Herbert was the fourth son of Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke, MP, and his first wife Margaret Sawyer, daughter of Sir Robert Sawyer of Highclere Castle. He joined the army and was lieutenant and captain in the 1st Foot Guards in 1719. Herbert was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Newport (Cornwall) on the interest of his first cousin, Sir William Morice at a by-election on 18 February 1726. He was returned unopposed again at the 1727 general election and voted with the Administration on the civil list arrears in 1729 and on the army in 1732. He became a captain and lieutenant colonel in 1730 and became Mayor of Wilton in 1732. At the 1734 general election he was returned again unopposed for Newport and voted with the Government on the repeal of the Septennial Act in 1734 and the Spanish convention in 1739. Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Herbert, KCB (February 1793 – 4 August 1861), was a British Royal Navy officer. He served in the Napoleonic Wars, War of 1812, and First Anglo-Chinese War. From 1847 to 1849, he was commodore of the South East Coast of America Station. Herbert served as Member of Parliament for Dartmouth as a Conservative from 1852 to 1857. Thomas Arnold Herbert (1863 – 22 November 1940) was a British Liberal Party politician and barrister. Background He was a son of Professor Thomas Martin Herbert, Professor of Philosophy and Church History at the Lancashire Independent College, whose mother was sister of Ann and Jane Taylor, authors of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. He was educated at Mill Hill School, Owens College, Manchester, and St John's College, Cambridge. He married in 1896, Elizabeth Goodier Haworth. She died in 1917. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court and its longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018. Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia. After his father abandoned the family, he was raised by his grandfather in a poor Gullah community near Savannah. Growing up as a devout Catholic, Thomas originally intended to be a priest in the Catholic Church but was frustrated over the church's insufficient attempts to combat racism.
