Hertfordshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
Hertfordshire was a county constituency covering the county of Hertfordshire in England. It returned two Knights of the Shire to the House of Commons of England until 1707, then to the House of Commons of Great Britain until 1800, and to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1800 until 1832. The Reform Act 1832 gave the county a third seat with effect from the 1832 general election. Elections were held using the bloc vote system, when contested. However, even after the 1832 reforms, contested elections were the exception: of the 17 elections from 1832 to 1880, 9 were uncontested, including the 1880 general election. Thomas Halsey (died 1788)
Thomas Halsey (c. 1731–1788) was a British merchant and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1768 and 1784. Halsey was the son of Charles Halsey of Great Gaddesden, Hertfordshire and his wife Agatha Dorrien, daughter of Frederick Dorrien of London. His grandfather had been MP for Hertfordshire and his father, a younger son, was a London merchant in the Hamburg trade. His father in 1739 had inherited the family estates on the death of his elder brother. Halsey himself joined his father in the business, and in or before 1759 he went to Hamburg as a member of the firm of Hanbury and Halsey. In 1760 while still out there, he was appointed a commissary of control to the army under Prince Ferdinand which involved examining the execution of contracts. In 1762 he succeeded to the family estates on the death of his brother, and in February 1763 returned to England, where he settled down as a country gentleman. Thomas Plumer Halsey MP (26 January 1815 – 24 April 1854) was a Member of Parliament for Hertfordshire from 1846 to 1854. Early life He was the son of Joseph Thompson Whately (1774–1818), who, on his marriage in 1804 to Sarah Halsey (d. 1864), the only child of Thomas Halsey, MP, assumed that surname by Act of Parliament. Among his siblings were Emma Halsey (wife of William Tyrwhitt-Drake) and Jane Halsey (wife of George Tyrwhitt-Drake). From his mother's second marriage to the Rev. John Fitz Moore, he had an elder half-sister, Georgiana Theodosia Halsey, who married Col. Leopold Grimston Paget (youngest son of Berkeley Paget, MP, and a grandson of Henry Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge). His paternal grandfather was Rev. Frederick Halsey
Sir Thomas Frederick Halsey, 1st Baronet, (9 December 1839 – 12 February 1927) was an English Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1874 to 1906. Background and education Halsey came from one of the most prominent families of Hertfordshire, whose seat was at Gaddesden Place, near Hemel Hempstead. He was the son of Thomas Plumer Halsey and his wife Frederica Johnston, daughter of General F. Johnston. His father was Member of Parliament (MP) for Hertfordshire from 1847 until he was drowned with his wife and his younger son in the shipwreck of the steamer ''Ercolano'' in the Gulf of Genoa on 24 April 1854. Frederick Halsey was at Eton at the time. He progressed from there to Christ Church, Oxford. He rowed in the losing Oxford eight in the Boat Race in 1860. Thomas Jefferson Halsey (May 4, 1863 – March 17, 1951) was a Republican Representative representing Missouri's 6th congressional district from March 4, 1929 – March 3, 1931. Halsey was born in Dover, Morris County, New Jersey. His family moved to near Holden, Johnson County, Missouri in 1878. He attended the Home Academy at Holden, the State Normal School at Warrensburg, and the University of Missouri. He taught school and engaged in the mercantile business in Holden from 1880 to 1881. He was member of the State Republican committee 1896–1898; delegate to the Republican State conventions in 1896, 1908, and 1912; mayor of Holden 1902–1904.
