Thomas H. Vail
Thomas Hubbard Vail (October 21, 1812–October 6, 1889) was the first Episcopal Bishop of Kansas. Early life Vail was born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Israel E. Vail and Maria Rogers Vail, who had emigrated there from New England.Thompson-Stahr, 475 He attended Washington College (now Trinity College), graduating in 1831.Perry, 157 He next attended the General Theological Seminary, graduating in 1835. In 1836, he married Frances Sophia Burling, with whom he had seven children. Vail was ordained deacon that year, and ordained priest in 1837. The College of the Sisters of Bethany is a defunct school located in Topeka, Kansas, United States. The school was chartered by the Kansas Territory on February 2, 1861 (although Kansas was officially admitted to the United States, Union four days earlier) and was originally named ''Episcopal Female Seminary of Topeka'' but changed its name on July 9, 1872. Classes began with 35 students and 2 teachers on June 11, 1861. The school operated under the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas church until it closed in 1928. The "territorial charter" was approved by the legislature on January 29, 1861—the same day that James Buchanan, President Buchanan signed the Act of Congress admitting Kansas into the Union as a state. Henry Washington Lee
Henry Washington Lee (July 29, 1815 – September 26, 1874) was a 19th-century bishop in the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America. He served as the first Bishop of Iowa from 1854–1874. He also served as Provisional Bishop of Nebraska from 1857–1859 and Provisional Bishop of Kansas, 1860–1864. Biography Early life & ministry Lee was born in Hamden, Connecticut, but the family soon moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he grew up and was educated. His father was Roswell Lee, who was a colonel and the superintendent of the Springfield Armory. He was ordained a deacon at Grace Church in New Bedford, Massachusetts and a priest in the Episcopal Church by Alexander Viets Griswold in October, 1839.
