Thomas Gibson (American Politician)
Thomas Gibson (1750 – May 13, 1814) was an American Revolutionary War soldier who became the first Auditor of the U.S. State of Ohio. Gibson was born in Virginia, and fought in the American Revolutionary War. He moved to the Northwest Territory, where he was auditor of the Territory. Ohio became a state in March, 1803. The Ohio General Assembly met in joint session, and elected Gibson as the first Ohio State Auditor on March 15, 1803. He served a three-year term, and was re-elected by the legislature on January 20, 1806. Taylor 1899 : 48 Gibson served until resigning March 1, 1808. Gibson was a Freemason. Northwest Territory
The Northwest Territory, also known as the Old Northwest and formally known as the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio, was formed from unorganized western territory of the United States after the American Revolutionary War. Established in 1787 by the Congress of the Confederation through the Northwest Ordinance, it was the nation's first post-colonial organized incorporated territory. At the time of its creation, the territory included all the land west of Pennsylvania, northwest of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River below the Great Lakes, and what later became known as the Boundary Waters. The region was ceded to the United States in the Treaty of Paris of 1783. Throughout the Revolutionary War, the region was part of the British Province of Quebec. Chillicothe ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Ross County, Ohio, United States. Located along the Scioto River 45 miles (72 km) south of Columbus, Chillicothe was the first and third capital of Ohio. It is the only city in Ross County and is the center of the Chillicothe, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 22,059 at the 2020 census. Chillicothe is a designated Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Benjamin Hough
Benjamin Hough (1773 – September 4, 1819) was the second State Auditor of the U.S. State of Ohio from 1808 to 1815. He also served in local political offices and in both houses of the Ohio General Assembly. Hough was born in Virginia. He was in Jefferson County, Northwest Territory by 1802 when he surveyed Cross Creek Township into quarter sections. He was elected a county commissioner at the first election, April 2, 1804, after Ohio became a state. Hough represented Jefferson County in the Ohio State Senate 1805 to 1807, and the Ohio House of Representatives 1807 to 1808. Thomas Gibson resigned as Ohio State Auditor March 1, 1808. The legislature had adjourned February 22, 1808, and would not meet again until December, so Governor Thomas Kirker appointed Hough as Auditor.
