Thomas Fortescue (1683 – 23 January 1769) was an Irish Member of Parliament. Origins He was descended from Sir Faithful Fortescue (c.1581β1666), a royalist commander during the English Civil War, a member of the Fortescue family of Buckland Filleigh in Devon, descended from Sir John Fortescue (c.1394-1479), Chief Justice of the King's Bench, of Ebrington Manor, Gloucestershire, a younger grandson of the Fortescue family of Whympston in the parish of Modbury in Devon, the earliest Fortescue seat in England. The Irish House of Commons was the lower house of the Parliament of Ireland that existed from 1297 until 1800. The upper house was the House of Lords. The membership of the House of Commons was directly elected, but on a highly restrictive franchise, similar to the unreformed House of Commons in contemporary England and Great Britain. Catholics were disqualified from sitting in the Irish parliament from 1691, even though they comprised the vast majority of the Irish population. The Irish executive, known as the Dublin Castle administration, under the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, was not answerable to the House of Commons but to the British government. However, the Chief Secretary for Ireland was usually a member of the Irish parliament. In the Commons, business was presided over by the Speaker. Thomas Fortescue, 1st Baron Clermont (9 March 1815 β 29 July 1887) of Ravensdale Park in County Louth, Ireland, was an Irish Whig politician and was the historian of the ancient Fortescue family of 12th century Devonshire origins. Origins He was born on 9 March 1815, the son of Chichester Fortescue (1777β1826) of Dromisken, County Louth, Ireland, by his wife Martha Angel Hobson, a daughter of Samuel Meade Hobson of Muchridge House, County Cork, Ireland, a barrister. His younger brother was Chichester Parkinson-Fortescue, 1st Baron Carlingford (1823-1898). He was a descendant of Chichester Fortescue of Dromisken, whose brother William Fortescue was the grandfather of William Fortescue, 1st Earl of Clermont (1722-1806). Sir Arthur Brooke, 1st Baronet
Sir Arthur Brooke, 1st Baronet PC (Ire) (1726 β 7 March 1785) was an Irish baronet and politician. He was the son of Henry Brooke and his wife Lettice Burton, daughter of Benjamin Burton. Brooke was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1746. He was appointed High Sheriff of Fermanagh in 1752, and became later Governor of County Fermanagh. In 1761, Brooke was elected to the Irish House of Commons for Fermanagh, a seat he held until 1783. Subsequently, he represented Maryborough until his death in 1785. On 3 January 1764, he was created a baronet, of Colebrooke, in the County of Fermanagh and on 15 May 1770, he was invested to the Privy Council of Ireland. Marriages and children On 6 August 1751, he married firstly Margaret Fortescue, daughter of Thomas Fortescue and Elizabeth Hamilton. The Baronetcy of Goodricke of Ribston was created in the Baronetage of England by King Charles I on 14 August 1641 for his loyal supporter John Goodricke of Ribston, Yorkshire. James Fortescue
James Fortescue (15 May 1725 – May 1782) was an Irish politician. He sat in the Irish House of Commons for Dundalk between 1757 and 1760 and County Louth between 1761 and his death. He was also elected for Monaghan in 1776, but chose to continue sitting for Louth. He was appointed to the Irish Privy Council on 7 May 1770. William Henry Fortescue, 1st Earl of Clermont, KP (5 August 1722 β 30 September 1806), was an Irish peer and politician. Origins He was the eldest son of Thomas Fortescue (1683β1769), a Member of Parliament for Dundalk. His younger brother was James Fortescue, MP and Privy Counsellor. Career He served as High Sheriff of Louth in 1746. He represented Louth in the Irish House of Commons from 1745 to 1760 and subsequently Monaghan Borough from 1761 to 1770. In 1768 he sat briefly as Member of Parliament for Dundalk before opting to sit for Monaghan Borough, for which he had also been elected. He was appointed Governor and Custos Rotulorum of County Monaghan for life in 1775, standing down just before his death in 1806. He was created Earl of Clermont in 1777 and a Knight Founder of the Order of St Patrick on 30 March 1795. John Mordaunt, 1st Viscount Mordaunt (18 June 1627 β 5 June 1675) was an English royalist.
